I am really ambiguous about this, on the one hand I realise it is a silly amount of money for a player with a severe injury who is post-peak already.

On the other hand he IS the Lakers of the last two decades, he deserves anything he asks for on the basis of services rendered.

Unfortunately the equation makes least sense for the Lakers and it is clear Kobe did not have the best interest of HIS franchise in mind, if they wanted to do anything of meaning he should have gone for a much more reasonable contract.

It's not like the Lakers had any leverage here. You're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I thought Kobe wanted to win more titles?

35 million tied to Kobe, Nash, Young & Sacre next season with only 25 million to fill out that roster.

Good luck with Mitch Kupchak.

well still a great signing. I doubt the lakers even bothered negotiating. they put an offer on the table, kobe couldnt refuse it, and the deal was done.

Because he 's a Lakers legend and they want him to retire a Laker. He helped bring 7 chips to the Lakers. How many teams even have 1 championship in 17 years?

He deserves to retire a Laker.

I must've missed #6 and #7. What years did those happen, 2008.5 and 2009.64?

Or did you retroactively subtract a title from Detroit and Boston?

Kobe is a power player. 48.5M over two years, coming off an achilles injury.

This is what I like to call a "Legacy Signing" - you get paid beaucoup bucks at the end of your career because of what you did for the franchise when you were younger.

It's a respect thing.

It's Kobe.. got to take care of him. No other choice by the lakers was possible.

The Lakers have draft picks? Don't they have two going to Phoenix soon?

Not really. One of the greatest players in NBA history will now retire a Lakers. How can that be bad? It's not a 7 year contract. It's 2 years.

Shaq was one of the greatest players in NBA history and nobody thought it wise to offer him a huge contract for his final years.

Yup. No other explanation. Kobe's meant so much for the Lakers last 20 years, and he will have some kind of role with them for next 50.

it went last year if I'm not mistaken

you also cant trade picks in consecutive years and they didn't have one last year so they have to have one this year
