Not being recognized or being underrated isn’t the same as failing to meet one’s potential. You seem confused by the thread.

Confusing is your saying he met and/or exceeded expectations (in my view, he didn't), or that being underrated is not the same as falling short of one's potential (though nobody said it was, in some cases, it is). You seem to think his being a good player with a respectable career excludes him from the discussion.

If someone suggests Willie Mays fell short of his potential what they likely mean is that, for all his accolades, he never won a World Series.

Lamar Odom and Rasheed Wallace even though they won championships. Also- Isaiah Rider had the talent to be one of the greatest players of all time. Instead, he never made an All Star team and is forgotten.

Darko was just over hyped, had plenty of opportunity to play to his potential, and he probably did.

As unbelievable as he was when he was so aggressive in the playoff series against the Heat, I feel like Penny wouldn't been considered the 2nd best PG of all time when he retired if he hadn't gotten injured.

Was waiting for this one. I agree. Odom was good, very good, even great in spurts, but he could have been a HoF player.

Another name that comes to mind is Jamal Mashburn. He put up big numbers but wasn't the difference maker he should have been.

Or maybe I just have high expectations from big guys who can dribble and move.

Vince Carter had beyond MJ athletic potential, but the heart of Bargnani. He should have had a Kobe like career.

I can't really go with Shaq. Sure, he could have been better, but considering that he is still argueably a top 10 player of all time, he barely missed out on his peak potential.

I'm going to go with Penny and Grant Hill, because they were on the cusp of sustained greatness, before their injuries derailed that.

History lesson... shaq was a poor mans wilt.

Based on what? Shaq never made a 60 win team worse.

Jonathan Bender. He could have been a poor man's KD if he stayed healthy.

Magic Randolf could have been really good if he had as much fire as KG or hit the gym like Giannis.

Ask Gus Johnson, the only man to ever get a dislocated shoulder getting his shot blocked. Will could bench more in his golden years than shaq could in his prime. He'd of pushed shaq around like a rag doll.
