If the ratings nosedive would cause lower salaries, meaning that no dumb **** would be overpaid in the future, then I'm all in.

It's the quality of the product, not the identity of the teams, that puts fannies in the seats or induces viewers to endure an almost endless stream of dumb commercials.
I'll bang my drum again: stop calling every touch foul and let the players play. Every game in which one team shoots 30+ free throws is a game that turns fans off. Stop coddling the stars, too.

Why the random threads on stuff like this?
Will Celts Lakers bring ratings back?
Does Giannis and Luka being foreign make the ratings drop?
Nonsense. The game just isn't easy on the eyes now. They need to fix the rules because it feels so fabricated

Why are there so many topics about the ratings? That really doesnt have anything to do with us as fans. As long as the NBA isnt going anywhere i'm happy.

Knicks-Lakers would get executives salivating. Maybe someday
The NFL had a few lean years ratings wise and bounced back this year. Next season, KD will be healthy, the Warriors might be scary looking and Zion/other young stars will be more marketable.

And i couldn't care less for the ratings. They have chosen to broadcast a million warriors/pelicans games and the teams are depleted. Serves them right.
I want the C's to reach the Finals because i'm a fan. If the raps or the bucks get there instead, i'll still watch.
That's not the point. You're already a fan. No one is worried you're going to stop watching.
Its the growth of the sport and the would-be fans that will kill the league. What's the incentive for a fringe casual or newcomer to commit? You need the big star or story to get them through the door. Or simply huge popularity of the game which will bring in new fans just so they can see what the excitement is over. Its why a lot of us are here today. Something got us through the door and it sure as hell wasn't a Bucks game. Furthermore, less fans in the long run also means less talent making its way to the league since all players start out as fans. Not caring about ratings is like being in-denial about an obvious impending problem.
Well like you said, a team needs a big star which is something the Bucks have in Giannis Antetokounmpo. So there's no reason why a story like them making it to the Championship for the first time since Kareem can't gain more fans. It should be about the hard work the players do on the floor rather than what the name of the city either team plays for is. Look at the Spurs journey. Back in 1999 their first Finals trip in the Duncan era had very little ratings, but things changed as more time went by. Duncan turned the Spurs into arguably my Lakers biggest rival of that early 2000s decade, and more fans tuned in each time they made it to the round. Giannis could definitely do the same thing if he decides to remain there.

Higher ratings are good for making money for people in the NBA business, but it doesn't make the game better. It might even make it worse due to ad pollution: Ads on the uniforms, in the sentences of play by play announcers, corporate logos everywhere, TV timeouts, stadiums named after conglomerates, etc.
Less advertising would make the game more enjoyable.

I'm seeing a lot of comments about who cares about ratings. As a fan of the league I care about ratings in the sense that the league gets money from the networks, and if ratings suck they get less money, which negatively impacts the growth of the league I love. I want the NBA to flourish.

I don't see how returning to the 80's helps the league grow. We've already passed that. But hey, nostalgia.

A Lakers-Celtics Finals would be awesome. Those of us in the Midwest would finally get to see some coverage of those teams on ESPN. Now if ESPN can just figure out a way to show at least one (1) Yankee-Red Sox game every year, we're on to something!

They have such a big following that I have never seen anyone wearing any of their clothing outside of BOS despite having lived in multiple large US cities. Must be quite the following !!! Heck, I saw more Chris Cooley Washington Redskins jerseys being worn when I was in STL than I saw all Celtics gear combined.
I would bet the average person off the street couldn't name even 1 Celtics player.
Jayson Tatum is number 4 in jersey sales in the league, and the Celtics are number 2 in merchandise sales.
All you have are anecdotes.
The flaw is that you are using data that does not have to do with the conversation.
Having high jersey sales and high merchandise sales doesn't show that people outside BOS would tune in to watch them. It is very possible that BOS fans just buy more Merchandise than other fan bases.
So you're calling his data flawed when your data is "oh I lived in 2 big cities and didn't see much Celtics gear". Your data is perfect then right? Someone can't be this illogical can they?

Re: Would a Celtics vs Lakers Final bring the fans back?
To me it looks like the fans no more care about the rivalries between the cities and it's all about the players that are going head to head. With so many tourists, pricey tickets that make working class unable to attend games and too many superstars teaming up instead of going against each other, lost are the old rivalries.
I don't like that at all, but it is what it is.

If the Celtics played the LAL in the finals I think they would barely win a game.

For sure. But existing salaries won't drop, each team's cap will drop. And I don't think it's very fun when teams suddenly don't have money for free agents. And as I said, I'd just like to see the league continue to grow instead of the opposite.
