That's an 18 year old Kobe, those 4 airballs only propelled him to become the beast he has become. 5 titles, you'll never change that.

Yeah well he was a brick master. Missing shots was what he was best at.

Kobe career bricks: 14,481
Kobe career makes: 11,719

If you've been watching Kobe all these years then you've seen him miss almost 3,000 more times than you've seen him make. :o

30,000 Point Club - Lowest FG%:

1. Kobe Bryant .447
2. Dirk Nowitzki .471
3. Michael Jordan .497
4. LeBron James .504
5. Julius Erving .506
6. Karl Malone .516
7. Wilt Chamberlain .540
8. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar .559

I maintain that Kobe Bryant is the most overrated player in NBA history.

His status in the minds of his biggest supporters (GOAT/Top 3/Top 5) does not match who he actually was (Top 15/Top 20).

Still better than LeBron.

LeBron can pad his stats as much as he wants, he'll never be as good as Kobe.

You make that kind of an allegation you better back it the **** up with something other than yes.

The thread has been locked, but I can confirm it like many others. Pennebaker himself has confirmed that he used Kobe's death as part of basketball trash talk. He got away with it.

Only this isn’t a normal discussion and the intent is clear. But damn, so edgy and dark. Very cool. Very impressed.

Not about being edgy but hey I'm impressed by your use of retired reddit comebacks.

Point is yeah he died it was sad but that has nothing to do with the thread. People should be able to talk about Kobe like they did before now. Especially since theres a pandemic going on. Sorry dude but your role model isn't the most important story right now

Yeah man I’ve honestly never used Reddit. Your very brash lack of humanity is just sort of forced and it’s a very “look at me” type of attitude. You do you though.

How the hell do you correlate taking random, leveled shots at a dead man to highlight whatever negatives exist in his professional career, and the Coronavirus? Lol

I’m not trying to censor anyone. Discuss whatever you like, but it’s a bad look. That’s all I’m saying.

There used to be a website called NBA Miner that had a formula and a ranking of every NBA player based on:

"Clutch Time: During the 4th quarter or overtime, with less than five minutes remaining, and neither team ahead by more than five points"

Kobe was ranked in different seasons: 10th, 2nd, 16th, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 2nd

He was consistently top 5 in the entire NBA . . .year after year

If you watched most of his games, like I did, it wasn't uncommon to see him win games with his scoring and defense in the 4th quarter. It's not all about the last second shot, although he had a lot of those go in as well.

I don't want to go through the effort of finding stats I have seen previously on clutch stats that followed those same parameters. During Kobe's prime he had a slightly below average fg% compared to the other players that attempted the most clutch shots. But Kobe took more of those shots than any player by a mile. I think he had 25% more attempts than the next highest player.

So he obviously scored the most "clutch points," but he converted at a mediocre rate. I'd like to see the exact numbers and that formula, but I prefer efficient scoring over volume scoring.

*Found it: https://www.libertyballers.com/2012/2/29/2832299/lebron-james-kobe-bryant-dwyane-wade-clutch-nba-playoffs-4th-quarter

2000-2012: All shots with less than 5 minutes less, and game within 5 points (regular season and playoffs).

Can't post the chart though without it looking like a mess.

I disagree with your opinion.

IMO Kobe is not on King James' level.

It's been 2 months since Kobe's tragic death. For anyone that offended that we have gone back to talking about Kobe's career in the same way we always have, what is the appropriate timeline?

Is this discussion ok at 3 months, 6 months, a year? Honestly just curious

Probably not. I don't think we'll ever see an 18 year old in an elimination game. Kobe was never the best player in the NBA in my opinion, but from his rookie year until 2013, he thought he was the best player on the planet. That's why he was willing to take these shots, and it's why he had such a great career.

Lebron is a SF who plays 5ft from the rim. Kobe (rest in peace my hero) was a SG who played in the mid range primarily.

OBVIOUSE-****ing-ly they are going to have differences in their FG%...

There's a reason why most if not all NBA players have kobe in their top 10 ratings but you fans don't, its because you haven't played basketball at a high level.

I love how Kobe never backed down from the challenge and took all the game winning attempts, for better or for worse. Sure it might not have always been the best basketball decision, but it made for great entertainment.

I suppose it would depend on the formula.

For instance 82games still has their clutch time numbers going back to the early 2000's, and just taking 09/10 for instance ... Kobe averaged 51.2 points per 48min during clutch time. If you stop there, that's probably near the top in the league; but his eFG% was just 49.5%, his team only outscored the opponent in 13 of 24 games, and his Net48 was +6.9.

But that same season LeBron averaged 66.1 points per 48 with 55.0 efg%, outscored the opponent in 32 of 41 games, and his Net48 was +36.9.

Of course LeBron is LeBron even if everyone didn't realize it back then ... so maybe Kobe still graded out well because other players just stunk in clutch time? That's a definite possibility as a quick check confirms many of Kobe's contemporaries did stink in the clutch that season.

But this is the sort of thing that needs to be graded against team efficiency. A star player consuming a lot of shots and delivering meh efficiency may actually be hurting his team, and a very strong team may only need to hold a lead to close out a game.

They both start on the perimeter, and Kobe even had the benefit of the Triangle .vs. spamming the high P&R over and over.

Yes, I to believe there's a reason ... and I suspect it's because players respect 1v1 talent and don't concern themselves with details.

You can live a lot of things down, especially things that happen when you are new in the league. Kobe had a long successful career to erase our memory of a series back when he was a rookie teenager, lol

Dirk on a 67 win team lost to the 8th seed, how many times is that actually brought up in regards to him now?
