How will Tyler Herro fare this upcoming season?

Herro’s Basketball Reference projection for the season is:

18.2ppg, 5.9rpg, 3.8apg, 0.8spg, 0.4bpg, 45% FG, 38% 3P, 83% FT.

That seems reasonable. Not too much worse than Morant’s numbers. I wonder how they come up with this stuff?

If you swap Duncan Robinson for Herro in the starting lineup then Miami would have no one off the bench that could consistently create their own shot until Oladipo gets back. There would be a huge hole on the bench as far as shot creation. Herro was assisted on only ~24% of his field goals in the preseason because of it. Vast majority of the offense from the bench is from him creating for himself and others. Duncan Robinson gets assisted on nearly all his shots so he wouldn't be a good fit on a bench without a real offensive hub.

It's not about who starts. It's about minutes and who finishes games.

Duncan is an incredible pure shooter, but he needs playmakers to set him up. He's at his best being set up by guys like Lowry, Jimmy, and Bam.

Unlike Duncan, Tyler can create his own shot and shots for others. But those skills aren't nearly as necessary when the 3 players I mentioned are all on the court.

If you are trying to maximize the talent on the team, as opposed to worrying about who starts it just makes sense to bring Herro off the bench instead of Duncan.

Put Herro in the starting lineup and the bench rotation becomes Duncan, Struss, Markieff, Vincent, and Dedmon.

Which means all the move accomplishes is having two players on the bench w overlapping skillsets (Duncan/Struss), extremely limited bench playmaking, more playing time needed for Vincent (who's not very good), and less time on the court for Herro to be used as a shot creator.

If he earns it, Herro will play big minutes. He will finish games. But unless Oladipo can come back at some point to add a playmaker to the bench, Herro shouldn't start on this team the way it's currently built. Even then, I don't think it would be ideal. He'd have to start playing at an all-star level for it to honestly begin to make sense.

He needs to learn how to draw fouls, then his improvement will be massive, he already started by getting some muscle. If he learns how to draw some fouls he will be way more effective, should become a starter caliber player in a couple of years.

I don't know how he will fare, but he will have every opportunity to thrive this season. If he has been putting in the work (Not an expert on him but seems like something he is criticized about), he should take a step up whether he starts or come off the bench. You expect a player his age to improve in a vacuum, and in terms of his role on the team, he should still have plenty of usage to show what he could do on the ball, and should be getting easier looks than he ever received before. He should still receive atleast 30 minutes a game and possibly more if his performance warrants it.

The only wild card is if Dipo comes back strong and shows that he's capable of playing near 30 minutes a game more effectively than Herro. That is very unlikely, and even in that case Herro will have plenty of opportunities to show any improvements before Dipo is back, and should still have plenty of minutes even in that case.

Nunn and Dragic are gone , opening up around 56 minutes a game. While Lowry is certainly a far better player than each of those guys, he is still relatively old and won't be playing much more than 30 minutes per game. The minutes will be there for him even with a healthy Oladipo, and without Oladipo he is basically forced to play those minutes due to a lack of options.

So even in the worst case scenario he should still get around the same minutes, with one year's improvement, with similar usage, while playing next to better players who are likely to elevate his game. In a smart system like the Heat I don't think whether he starts or comes off the bench will hinder him too much, as long as the minutes are there.
