And now everyone should understand why the Suns didn't max Deandre Ayton in the offseason. Look at MPJ. Look at Collin Sexton. This is why teams should fight for at least a small concession when a non All-Star player wants the max after year 3, they are giving up something by signing the player early.

Luka needs to be working his phone ASAP and hard, convincing Jokic to ask for a trade to the Mavs.

Big picture thinking would be not offering a max contract one year early to a player medically red flagged as 'never gonna play in the NBA', with 2 back surgeries before the age of 21.

Dude is now 3 back surgeries in before his 24th birthday.

Well sixers gave embiid a max contract extension missing 2 full season and playing 31/82 games in his 3rd season. 5/150 million max at the time.

Although it was structured with injury protection (it was still guarantee embiid at least 90 million regardless).

Denver should have put injury protection in the extension.

The Nuggies are screwed. They're also lucky that Jokic doesn't care about his career or basketball in general.

Roy had more success in the league than MPJ has had so far. Might stay that way too.

It was worth the gamble drafting MPJ, but that contract should have been held off on until he was an RFA. They just outbid themselves instead of letting the market set his value. Maybe they were worried it would alienate him and make him unhappy, but if he's that kind of player, he's probably an ego you don't want in the lockerroom anyway.

Sure hope they put a lot of protections on that contract.

I think Denver thinks like Utah and also Portland to some extent and other smaller markets in that you pay the guys that are willing to play in those markets. Especially if there's the fear that even with Top 10 players(Jokic, Lillard, Giannis) that you still might not be able to attract any premier FAs.

I don't understand these front office guys, like mess up on a pick ok but why do silly stuff like signing injury prone guys thats not even a star to a huge contract and you have a whole year before he's a rfa.

These NBA FOs not even better than a lot of regular fans.

Two seasons ago, in the bubble, Nuggets made it to the WCF with Murray, Jokic, injured Harris, old Millsap, and Grant. We had rookie MPJ from the bench. This years team, if healthy (what is left) could be pretty good. Healthy Murray, Barton, Gordon, somebody and Jokic is better starting 5 than the bubble one. Without Murray, Barton and Dozier they made it to the 2nd round last year. Without MPJ and Dozier I think we can make it to the 2nd round this year if we don't lose another player in the process and from there who knows. So the sky is not falling...jet :(

John Wall: I have the worst contract in the league.
MPJ: hold my beer

In hindsight, Nuggets will be better off with Grant rather than MPJ for the money.

i don't really get it, is there some advantage to waiting to extend your RFA a year early? i cant figure out any good reason you'd sign a max RFA any time sooner than the last possible moment

Or he should ask for a trade to Denver because I think Murray, Gordon, Barton, Morris... is better supporting cast than KP, Hardaway, Dorian, Powel...

Happy MPJ got paid....Denver has insurance. If MPJ comes back and can play he is worth the money.

No one saying wall worth 40 or 30 or maybe 25 mil a year even if he plays healthy right now....not the same at all to me

I'd almost say that the Nuggets and Jokic should do a wink wink 'you're injured' situation and get a top pick.

No, the doctor was wrong, not "right all along." In fact, he will never be right. Porter did play in the NBA.

Jokic will be 32 when MPJ’s max contract runs out.

Extending him was a stupid idea from the beginning. I mean I would've got it, if MPJ was willing to sign a way more team friendly deal like 4/100M instead of 5/173M and they thought it was worth the gamble, especially if he stays healthy.

I wonder if an unextended MPJ, who is out for the season would have anyone interested in him in 2022 free agency. I mean he was red flagged before even getting drafted. I don't think anyone would've offered him a long or lucrative deal next offseason.

I hope him and Murray return at a level, that is enough to keep Jokic happy. I could see him bail if the team is crippled with 60M per year on 2 players, who aren't even at an all star level anymore.

Letting go grant keeping MPJ was the mistake . With MPJ injury history why didn’t they try keep him first ? Pay him what you payed MPJ ….

Yea that made no sense at all. You never Max a guy out a year early unless it's a no brainer Max player like Luka or Trae
