What should the wizards have done, keep Beal at this cost or let him walk and tank?
Obviously, tanking nets picks..but that's never guaranteed. On the other hand, signing Beal at least let's you keep a valuable asset. But the deal can be a trade killer, as he's not gonna be very tradeable on the market
Time will tell with these Supermax deals. They were intended for generational talents, but as predicted, 2nd tier stars on bad teams are getting them too. Wonder how this will play out
More than Lebron

He clearly loves WSH.
Been through plenty of crap team wise.Stayed loyal.Got paid.
Too much? Ofcourse just like every single super max signed.
Will ask for trade in few years? Maybe
of the many things i don't like about lebron, and doesn't it always come back to him,,,,is the notion that a star is not a star if he doesn't force his way out to manufacture a ring
It's one of the negative things about the league.
I'm pretty certain that Westbrook is making more money this year than Beal. How about Ben Simmons?CobraCommander wrote:Ice Trae wrote:

It's our stupid owner Leonsis. The Robert Sarver of the East (except Sarver has actually owned teams that have won more than 50 games and have gone far in the playoffs).
The mandate is to NEVER TANK (he's quoted on the record for that). The entire strategy is to get two home playoff games to ensure profitability. That's it. He doesn't care about winning a title. He moved our legendary local broadcasters off of the floor just so he could sell more court-side seats. Then he forced said legendary local broadcasters out for cheaper substandard replacements. He's routinely sold 2nd rounders for cash (including the 2nd rounder that Jordan Clarkson became). He's the worst owner in the NBA.

From a business perspective, your owner is playing the percentages. Only 1 NBA team wins the championship every season, the amount of risk with signing multiple stars and paying luxury tax for a small chance of winning may be not in his Risk Tier appetite. I get it.
However, the thought of the team (Wizard) competing for a playoffs spot is, to him (I assume), is enough to bring in the audience and TV ratings to keep a successful business. This path is sustainable.... its a decent business plan, but Beal is not even guaranteed to lead Wizards to enough wins to compete for 8th spot... Wizards are likely 10th to 11th and the Play-In is the only reason they have a chance.
