In the thread title change “is” to “was”.

Re: Jimmy Butler is an MVP level impact player
Nah, I say GSW ordered an executive code red because Curry was going to be questionable the rest of the playoffs. Even if by some miracle they pull out a series win against Minny, they are getting stomped next round, especially if Curry is nursing a nagging injury (assuming he could even play at all). If you see your primary option not attempting shot in fourth you know the team has been told to shut it down. GSW was not really trying to win.
That said Butler is getting older. He's needs to up that 3p percentage and efficiency now that the can't be the same kind of athletic finisher that he used to be. He's not shooting the ball with enough accuracy from deep at this stage of his career. Lebron leveled up his 3p game and it has allowed him to extend his career greatly. Butler is going to need to do the same.

The likelier explanation is that he got old. How many wings can dominate consistently in the playoffs at age 35? LeBron, Mike ... OK that's about it. Even KD fails that test.
Which just justifies Riley not paying him.

Realistically though, what wing is dominating the Wolves with Jaden McDaniels guarding you and Gobert protecting the rim?

replace Tatun with Jimmy and Boston wouldn't have been down 3-1 to the Knicks. Jimmy is 35 and Tatum is in his prime.
I'm not gonna knock Jimmy for getting bounced in the second round with Steph out. gsw is built around Steph. even if he [Steph] isn't the best player anymore, losing him will have a bigger impact than losing anyone else.

Yea let's give Jaden his flowers. Jaden shut Jimmy down.

No "Playoff Jimmy" was always a made up narrative that people clung to despite facts and reason.
He was straight ass with the Wolves against the Rockets in the playoffs, yet everyone talked **** about KAT being soft and when Butler threw his tantrum and cried "You can't win without me" everyone took his side.
The bubble is the "Mickey Mouse" championship, i.e. not a valid title when talking about the Lakers/Lebron but everyone gargles Jimmy's balls for "carrying a bunch of scrubs" to the finals while babbling on about hEaT cUlTuRe.
What about 2023 then? How many other players have scored 56 points in a playoff game? How many other players have led their team to the finals twice? How many other players have had a playoff game against LeBron where they had more points, rebounds, and assists?
Butler is 32nd all time in playoff win shares, 27th in playoff VORP, 25th in playoff BPM, and 36th in playoff PER. Those are the facts.

He was injured and Curry got injured. Are you implying that he does better this year with the Heat?

Obviosuly not, but who cares at the end of day. Injuries are part of the game...even moreso so for a 37 year-old Steph & 35 year-old Jimmy. No excuses it's a results based business.NZB2323 wrote:BBallFreak wrote:Maybe Jimmy needed Heat culture a bit more than people thought.

Elite roleplayer a la Draymond. Massively overrated and only capable of playing hard like half a season a year.

You leverage above average players in the 25-30 age range. Relying on older players has more risk and more variance. Butler is 36, what do you realistically expect?

Re: Jimmy Butler is an MVP level impact player
Dude's 35, a slasher who takes contact all game long. Hasn't played 70+ since 2017. He's been memorable in the playoffs in recent years, but he certainly wasn't this year. Actually didn't shoot poorly from ATB in the playoffs, which was new-ish, but he just couldn't manage the volume necessary to drive O for the Warriors, especially without Steph. He was solid, but not incredible, against Houston (minding, of course, the injury) and just wasn't there for the series with Minny. He got up 20 on like -3% rTS and just didn't have the tools to take over. Stinkers to open and close the series, one big game, 2 decent games, and that's the end of that chapter, you know?
His short game has been pretty rough this year, his middle game vanished in the playoffs, and he had none of the rim pressure expected of Playoff Jimmy. And so he was quite tepid. That's pretty normal for a 35 yo slasher, to be honest, especially one with nagging injuries and an inconsistent jumper. Not really sure what people expected, particularly once Steph went down. Those two have good synergy together, but they're sports old, man; you can treat them like they're in their respective primes anymore, especially with Podz and Draymond blowing so hard, getting nothing from GPII, etc.

Unfortunately he's longer that guy as injuries and age had finally caught up to him sadly. Two years ago was his peak, its over the hill from now on.

You didn't need consistency though. You just need more than 1 good game, and at least 1 win.

What do you consider a "good game," though? He was pretty reasonable in Games 2-4, he just didn't have the ability to dominate outside the one game. And they very definitely needed him to be consistently dominant to win the Wolves series, and obviously he couldn't do that. Prior to that, he had 3 pretty strong games against the Rockets.

Butler is an incredible defender but he’s inconsistent offensively. When he’s on he can’t miss, when he’s off he can’t score. Kind of like Jamal Murray offensively but in the paint instead of the perimeter.

Let's not get carried away about Jimmy's playoff performance. He was good. On PER, which is a reasonable a measure as any, he had a higher score in the playoffs than any Timberwolf but Ant, than any Celtic period, than any Pacer period, than any Thunder except SGA, than any Nugget except Jokic, and so forth. Basically, he was an excellent second banana -- championship quality. But he definitely was not good enough to be the lead dog and carry a meh team, as he did at times with the Heat.

+1
He’s also 5th in WS and 7th in VORP this playoffs.
