No offense to all of you guys who don't think that Browns an upgrade to Thibs, but you didn't watch Thibs make mistake after mistake throughout his tenure here in NY. Just a stubborn old coach that refused to adjust and the game was passing him by. Many players didn't like his coaching style and FA's who are bench type players were putting it out there that they wouldn't want to come to the Knicks because they know Thibs wouldn't play them unless there were injuries. Go listen to Jeff Teagues podcast were he recently stated that Thibs won't even speak to you if you're a bench player. The KNicks got as far as they did due to their talent, not Thibs.

He was wrongly fired from the Kings after transforming and leading them to the most success they've had in years. Did I mention he took a young Cavs team to the Finals? We've seen what this brotha can do with elite talent and he now has that with Jalen Brunson"
Hard to regress in the XXLEastern conference. The bar has perhaps never been so low to reach the Finals.

Pretty sharp comeback. When did the Knicks win a championship last?

Zero chance you win anything with Dolan there. None.

Mike Brown is a great interviewer. He somehow gets all these high profile jobs: LeBron, lakers with Kobe and now the Knicks.
He is a hard worker and he learns from other great coaches like pops and Kerr. His offensive system sucked before he joined the Warriors. He is no innovator that is for sure.
Thibs is a far better offensive coach, but maybe Mike Brown can implement something he saw during his Warriors stint. Brunson is very different compared to Curry. Everyone talk about the Thibs offensive “system”. He always adapts to his players and he thought that was the best way to play given the personnel. If you want to watch thibs “system”, go watch some bulls games from 2014 or 2015.
NBA coaches don’t win championships after their 3rd stint. The only recent exception is Larry Brown, and Mike is no Larry Brown. Previously only Alex Hannum won on his 4th stint in 67. That is why some teams either hire coaches who already won an nba championship or a new head coach.

Hard to imagine Brown getting more out of the Knicks patchwork squad than Thibs did.

Re: It's Official, Mike Brown is the coach of the Knicks
Good for the Knicks.
Defense (unlike offense) can mostly be carried over by a new coach. We've seen this over and over again in the NBA. So you're not going to get much slippage defensively. Further, no coach on earth could have had a good defense with Sacramento so that's not a Mike Brown thing. He's inheriting a defensively capable and now well trained squad.
What they're getting a much improved offensive mind. In his last stint in Sacramento, Brown showed that he's one of the rare coaches who actually went out and learned things as an assistant, threw away his ancient offensive habits and seriously upgraded in that department. Whatever he learned under the Spurs and Warriors - he was a dramatically better offensive coach on the Kings than he was in his previous HC experience.
Guys like Thibs are a dime a dozen. Obsessed with defense, rebounds, turnovers and effort and have their team go at an unsustainable amount of effort from day 1 leaving no extra gear for the playoffs. A good shot for them is just a "good enough" shot and a good offense is a "good enough" offense. People get surprised early on with the inflation these guys can produce and then a couple of year later they've lost their voice in the locker room because no one can really function that way all day every day for several years. If you're unhappy with Brown and miss Thibs you can go hire JVG after. If he's not available, Bickerstaff will be plateau-ing yet again. Billy Donovan has joined these ranks too. These guys never win titles and they're always around, nothing major lost. They are just literally addicted at doing things in a harder way, whereas everyone else is after efficiency.
I think Thibs had a good offense this time around but just the effort was totally unsustainable.
The coaches who win titles are more balanced even if they're not masterful at one particular side of the court. Brown will deliver good results and they can probably still make one good trade to get them over the talent hump. Happy for Knick fans.

I don't see this improving the team outside of Brown using deeper rotations than Thibs. That in and of itself could prove to be beneficial on the whole but it's not a guaranteed difference making move or idea. This is a push in my view, albeit a slightly favorable one at best.

Mike is a good coach, the Kings issue was the roster not coaching. And in fairness to Monte, he lost power somewhere around his last 2 years of service. He’s an extremely smart guy who will do well in a behind the scenes role in LA.
Agreed, the issue is he got the team to over-achieve in a weaker West year than the ones that followed, plus they were healthy and the result is people expected more than that. The reality was that a Fox-Sabonis led team did not have a high ceiling, but people expected more after one good year. Then when the West got harder, bad moves were made by the FO, and some injuries hit and people didn't have proper expectations for the coach.

Yup. Hope he works out for you guys. Like seeing your team successful. Not sure he’s a championship coach but we were saying the same thing about Jason Kidd.

Mike Brown is in the perfect situation. The roster is stacked. He just needs to manage the minutes better than Thibs and the Knicks are set to make it to the finals barring any serious injuries to their stars.

Re: It's Official, Mike Brown is the coach of the Knicks
Personally, I wouldn't have fired Thibs but I voted Mike in as a slight upgrade over Thibs just based on his acumen. He's also a new voice for that locker room and from all the interviews I have seen with him, a real night/day difference from Tom.
He's always been a defensive minded coach prior to his assistant stint in Golden State and I do think he'll be able to tinker that end of the floor to improve upon that 14th ranked defense last season. Offensively, he's been able to learn a lot under Kerr and had Sacramento clicking before the front office messed around with the roster and got him fired.

On the fence on this one. We will see. Definite upgrade on offense, but probably a downgrade on defense. Might be a lateral move, slight downgrade or slight upgrade.

You were laughing off Mike Brown as a possibility a few weeks ago.
i did not expect him to be the hire i’ll say that much, but after the fact he’s really about the same level as thibs in terms of accomplishments. i don’t really see him as a downgrade really
Fair but be honest though. If there was a report a month ago that the Knicks wanted to fire Thibs to hire Mike Brown no one would have been on board with that. And when a team fires a coach they need to do better than "not really a downgrade" with his replacement.
