Probably just a thing they aren't stressed about, maybe some family things at play, but Paul could have gotten this deal at any second in LAL if he wanted.

Almost feels like Paul is seriously considering retiring.

Doubt the Lakers were interested in CP3 this time around.

CP3 and Smart are basically equal signings at this point.

You're right tho, probably just no interest on both sides.

Very different players though. Paul would be unhappy when the lion share of the ball is in Luka, LeBron or Reaves hands.

Fair, but also... whatever? I wasn't really worrying about that part of it with my comment... just that the quality of what they provide to a team at this point is roughly the same. Different qualities in terms of needs, but the impact overall is about the same.

Lakers aren’t winning anything. Not with Smart on the team. Good luck having him bomb 12 3’s a game

I don't know if "old" is the best description of a 31 year old basketball player, but he's certainly declined due to inability to stay on the court

He's not "old", but he's also not "good" either anymore.

Not all players age at the same rate.

Perfectly fine signing, but Smart doesn't provide much anymore. In his Celtic prime, he was a Tony Allen type. Once that falls off, you don't have much. Allen was absolutely pointless after Memphis and there's a reason Smart has been inconsequential post-Boston.

He's gonna provide a nice 10-15min a game, might be a guy you sub-in late in tight games when you need defense with a 1-2pt lead with under 24sec left, but if you expect literally anything else from Smart, you're delusional. All of his stints post Boston prove that out.

Again, not slamming the signing by the Lakers, in their spot where they clearly have an offseason where they want proven players without having to pay anything to get them, skimming the buyout market like this is a great move. But again, keep expectations in check.

Yea, I mean he played 54 games in two seasons, so not surprising that he's not been good post Boston.

Have no clue whether he can be better than he's been, but when you're playing 27 games/season, not really much going on there.

He's not a good 3 point shooter, but he can handle the ball and play defense, if healthy. Seems a finger injury kept him out most of last season. For the price, this was a good move by the Lakers...if health permits.

Lakers FO deserves credit if this works out, it’s a creative move. If he plays well he could also bring some toughness to a team that needs it.

Lakers should be much improved this year with the free agency additions

We have players that do what paul does only they do it better. There's no reason for the Lakers to have interest in him, heck does any team have interest in an almost 40 year old undersized point guard who has a nice history of injuries? Smart on the other hand is only 31,and defense is about effort. He brings more to the table than cp3 at this stage in their careers.

wouldn’t be least bit surprised if he’s traded by deadline lol. I think lebron and luka will get annoyed pretty quickly

NBA got to be on track to set the dead money record going into next season. Even as a percentage of the cap, it has to be a record.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Great move by the lakers -

Get a defense first guard that doesn’t need the ball or is concerned with scoring.

Smart is smart and tough - Luka and the lakers made a good call here

Maybe he can perform the extremely rare(perhaps unprecedented) “double buyout”

Annoyed that he plays defense hard on every possession?

As a wiz fan, I don’t want him trying to create anything on offense but I loved his intensity and focus on defense.

Luka won’t need get him the ball either - Luka will get all the guard shots and smart plays the other teams best wing… win win

This the 31 year old Lu Dort or Hoilday - it’s a win for the lakers

Sure. I truly don't care enough to have a back and forth over a guy with as little left in the tank as Paul or Smart.

Both will be rotational players who won't hurt you, but if you're in a big moment, both will be liabilities a la Conley.

If you're happy about the Smart signing, enjoy it! Don't care about Paul? You shouldn't, he wasn't gonna be that helpful anyway! All these statements are true.

Isn’t smart 31? If so that tank is in its prime

Okay Lakers really needed a player like him.

This is a great signing.

Nice deal for the Lakers... I think? He sort of disappeared completely post-Boston but if he's essentially the same player then yeah great deal

If you think all players age the same, you're clueless.

There's a reason some players flame out in their early 30's and some in their late 30's.

If you think all players are hitting their "prime" by their early 30's, you clearly are a newer NBA fan.
