Of course they didn't. I'd be curious to know how much money he is losing because he won't be getting the super max.

Does anyone know what he would be eligible for? I guess anything can change among league norms when his contract is up, but if he lost 100 mil with this, I wouldn't be surprised

We know his value based on the results we've seen from Luka.

They don't have to think AD is a better player, but rather a better fit for what they have with their roster. And I guess when I say they I mean one man, their GM.

AD is a legitimate top-10 player and there have been more lopsided trades for sure. What makes it really bad is the PR nightmare they've created. Trading the homegrown superstar and face of the franchise is just such a bad look, even if the concerns about his conditioning in the long run are valid. Luka is better than Tatum and Edwards, but I don't think Boston or Minny pulls the trigger on that trade, for that very same reason. Let's say something weird happens and Denver decides to trade Jokic. He's by far and away the best player in the league, but I guarantee you OKC doesn't trade Shai for him.

The Kyrie/AD duo is going to have to come out of the gate hard to mitigate some of this blowback.

I’ve spent the past few pages and threads stating I think this trade is fine from a Dallas perspective but I agree wholeheartedly with you in that fair trade or not, I wouldn’t have created this PR nightmare willingly. I’d have waited until the last possible moment, which I think is probably still a year away or this summer. I’d have done something similar to the Zion contract with weight and body fat restrictions. Let him lose some of that luster by refusing to show up in shape before demanding 350 million. Leaked some footage of him getting hung on the rim trying to dunk in practice.. SOMETHING! To appease my fanbase.

Luka would never sign a contract like that.

AD isn't a bad player, but at a minimum shouldn't Dallas have asked around the league first and started a bidding war before agreeing to anything...?

Let’s assume they did look around and said, AD is the player they want and look, they may actually be able to get him. Which player could they have gotten as good as AD?

This. There's no better city to play a sport and gain exposure than Los Angeles. He'll be an instant legend in this already rich storied franchise.

I think I know why this trade happened. I fear Luka has a serious, career altering injury. The Mavs, aware of that, wanted to make the best out of the situation. They figured that the Lakers would be interested in damaged goods Luka because they could still market the heck out of him, jersey sales are going to be through the roof, just like Bronny.

Dallas doesn't make this trade if Luka is healthy. But who knows, I'm just trying to figure out why it was made.

Still in shock about this but it will be funny seeing Lebron and Luka complaining to the refs at the same time

More offended with the fact Mavs felt they needed to get rid of him.

He’ll be more than happy being a Laker

This. I think people gonna be shocked when the dust settles. Mavericks are title contenders with one or two more pieces

I’m still in shock. Any commish in Fantasy would shut down this trade. **** 2K wouldn’t even take that offer. I still can’t believe the Mavs not only made this but offered it.

You may think he’s super valuable and untradable, but the Mavs clearly don’t. They think he’s an overvalued asset, and cashing him in for AD, Christie, and a pick is a good return. Time will tell if they’re crazy or not, but that’s what they believe after being around Luka these past 7 years.

How do you improve the ratings make a trade that nobody thought was possible and put him in the major market and probably the most popular franchise in the league in the Lakers.

Look at social media and the topics on this board. This move created headlines they literally just talked about this trade on World News. The NBA had to make a power move and Luka was that move.

You think there was no bidding war because the league conspired to make this happen...?

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. On paper Luka and LeBron aren't a good fit. Plus, LeBron is 40. When do the wheels fall off? To a degree they already have.

If Luka doesn't sign an extension does he eventually leave LA?

That's exactly what happened.

Never trust a sports entertainment business. Literally shady stuff happens all the time. From bad calls from the refs to certain stars getting in foul trouble.

When you have this multi billion dollar business and the company is losing viewers which leads to loss of money it affects every NBA owner pockets. You had to make a power move to get the viewers back interested in the league. This was a power move.

No GM would seriously trade a superstar just entering his prime for a aging superstar at the end of his prime. This move was made from behind the scenes with all the owners voting on it.

Never trust these billionaire owners. They talk behind the scenes. Their product was losing viewers something major had to happen.

That's possible, but I think it's more likely that this deal happened because of Nico Harrrison's past relationship with the Lakers.

If the league is conspiring to send star players to big markets then why is Jokic still in Denver? SGA in OKC?

And if they are...please send one to Chicago! haha.

assuming that Nico Harrison has some truth that nobody is aware of is a big stretch. Mistakes happen, big **** ups happen as well. This looks exactly a member of the "royal **** ups" club. I don't think Doncic' value has regressed at all, if you ask the majority of the league. If the Mavs FO want to create their own reality where they won the trade, fine. Only history will judge them.

You don’t just make this trade on a whim. It’s probably something they’ve been thinking about for months, if not years. They wanted OUT of the Luka Doncic business.

Maybe it comes out that the Mavs front office is run by crazy people, idk. But this is what they were thinking after working with Luka all these years.

Can LeBron play like a second fiddle? Becomes Draymond/Iggudala to Luka. 18/5/5 average but with plus defense.

It's just such a bizarre trade; they dealt a guy out of shape for a guy who is injury prone. The trade will never make sense to me, it'll be talked about for a very long time.

Congratulations on the trade, enjoy Luka.
