Why were the Turkish fans so happy even though they were getting blown out in their own stadium

I guess there's no excuse needed.

Here in Europe that's pretty common, I've never been in the US so can't say if it's the same thing there.

Those people were just happy they could cheer for their country. Lotta european countries have that mentality. See how happy lithuania was with their bronze medal .. Those fans will always support their country, no matter how bad they play, no matter how far they're behind .. I remember a Belgium-Turkey football game which Belgium won but still the only fans you could hear were the Turkish, why? Cause they know their players played at their best and showed heart .. (and cause the Belgians were attacking the beer stands to celebrate :lol)

But there are some countries that do the exact same opposite, like Spain. Today they were 20pts behind against Argentina and they were booing and even wanted their coach dead (or fired :D) .. I didn't hear a single "booooh" for the Turkish team today

It's all about the mentality ..

Teams knew they couldn't compete with Team USA's C / D team so to make it to the finals and have the honor of losing to them was basically all they could have hoped for.

Nothing wrong with Turkish fans being happy for Turk basketball. That team had a good tournament, it's just like every other team they couldn't match Team USA.

Because they support their country? And they reached the finals completing a great tournament? And probably because they have a lot of heart too.

They were proud of their team. When a low seed in the playoffs gets beat at home, if the team over achieved they get the same treatment, but obviously euro fans are more passionate.

Welp, the US just won the tournament that's supposedly the biggest deal in international basketball, yet in the US it's a clear distant second to the Olympics. And my excitement level towards it sides with it being a distant second.

Yeah, I'm glad they won but the US winning gold in WC or the Olympics is only slightly more meaningful to me than my team winning a regular season game and no where near as meaningful as a playoff win.

A few random thoughts, in summary:

- Turkish fans went totally silent after made USA baskets. I've never seen anything like it. It was so complete as to be almost creepy. They got so quiet I started wondering if they were about to attack.

- I dig the Euro soccer-style chants. Great atmosphere.

- ESPN botched the hell out of the whole thing. 2nd most annoying part? Camera shots. Whenever some high flier was going in for a dunk, they'd cut away at the last second to a camera under the basket. STOP IT! Made me nuts. You can't see anything from below the damn backboard.

- The wife noticed quasi-cheerleaders at a couple of games. I was surprised, given the host country's culture. (Any locals care to explain?)

- FIBA needs to spend some $ for ref training. As long as the refs are so egregiously un-qualified, it's going to be hard to grow the reputation of the international game...which is a shame.

- Steph Curry needs to buy a saw-zaw and bisect his medal. He can give 1/2 to Rondo for allowing him to be on the team. He was a total waste. His dad would've been better.

- Westbrook and Rose have the combined bball IQ of a moist cabbage. How many times did we have to see them dribble into a triple team and turn the ball over? I don't know how Boeheim's head didn't explode.

- KD is a freal among freaks.

Simple, Unlike common knowledge Turkey is a modern country but since 2002 islamic government trying to change Turkey in to a religious state (hope they will not succeed). That was the reason why Turkish president and PM was booed after the game. Also cheerleaders are not showing up when Turkish PM attends to a game.

Not sure if I understood the question, but as far as I know many of those cheerleaders were from Eastern Europe ( There was one group of cheerleaders from Lithuania, definitely).

US team B ( or C? ) is still way better than the best team from the rest of the world. However, Turks played real bad, mostly due to mental collapse. They did not even put up a fight and made lots of silly mistakes.
It probably did not help that they had the rough Serbia game the day before.

Also you could easily see how important Hedo is to the Turkish team. It is totally a different team without him on the floor. On a side note, I think Hedo's early attempts at provoking US players were deliberate. He tried to create some spark to get the crowd involved, which did not really work as he had to leave early with the injury.

That Durant kid is pretty good. Doesn't hype himself up, just plays the game. Good to see the young kids come in and dominate. I really hope to see him in the olympics.

I think USA's road to the final certainly benefited their chances to win gold. This is a very underrated factor when looking back at the tournament.

Of course, I'm not saying they couldn't have won had things been different. I felt they were a top contender before WC. But sometimes championships are attainable without much effort or opposition.
