It also clears the way for the next major item on the NBA's to-do list: expansion.

Commissioner Adam Silver was very clear on the order of his top agenda items in recent seasons, those being preserving labor peace (which was achieved with the new CBA), getting a new media deal (now essentially completed) and then -- and only then -- turning the league's attention toward adding new franchises. Las Vegas and Seattle are typically among the cities most prominently mentioned as top expansion candidates, with others such as Montreal, Vancouver and Kansas City, Missouri, expected to have groups with interest as well.

Once again, I'll believe it when I see it. He basically says there's little financial motivation for the other owners and they *just* signed a new media deal. Having more markets should be a bargaining chip, and exploring expansion after the deal seems like they're doing it in reverse order.

Its a foregone conclusion the two markets will be Seattle and Las Vegas. The real question is in a decade or more, what's up next? That's where the Vancouver, Mexico City, Louisville, Kansas City, Virginia Beach and others come into play.

the one thing I'm sure of is when the smoke clears there will be the same number of teams in the East and the West. if they only add Seattle and Las Vegas, I'd expect the Wolves or New Orleans to move East. but I think there's a non-zero chance they add four teams say Montreal and KC/StL

It's not an accident that the Ravens play in the AFC and the Commodores play in the NFC. That gives both CBS and Fox games in the metropolitan area. the NBA TV structure has been different.

No expansion is needed.

Doesn't matter which team is the second one, aslong as the Sonics come back. It has been 16 years of bleakness without a home in the NBA. Just cannot stand it anymore.

Does Adam Silver have near enough of the owners in agreement om this? I can't imagine they are in for this.

My guess and assumption was that it has likely been discussed for the last 5 years as reported and that they likely worked this in to the TV rights agreements, as in "as we discuss these news rights deals, we need to have confirmation from owners that they're onboard for expansion"

I'm assuming with more and more "hints and drops" lately from Silver is that it has already been guaranteed to complete with the owners and that we're just waiting on ownership groups to emerge and funds to be secured (so we're not in the same boat as the Minny deal that went south).

That's more than enough pro teams for Baltimore.

Virginia Beach is a cool spot.

Just not sure if makes sense considering they are connected to the DMV area.

They get a cut of the purchasing price for the new teams.

All they have to do is sign their signature on a piece of paper and they get an extra $100-$200 million per team.

They are totally for it.

Didn't Mark Cuban do this whole presentation on how they would lose more than that based on the % of the money they would lose as soon as like 5 years into the situation?
