I understand Cuomo has a job to do, but it is EXTREMELY selfish for him to ask for EVERYTHING from the Federal Government with a vague promise that they will send the resources to other states when their problem is over. You can't give all of the Federal inventory to 1 state.

That and the whole you are on your own attitude has been brainwashed into people's heads for decades. There is only one group of people that benefit from that attitude and its the mega rich.

Logical conclusion. Curious to see how many of the sick are the same people who thought this was a “hoax flu” and didn’t take precautions.

This annoys me. Deaths are heavily skewed towards people who are no longer likely to reproduce, so there is very little natural selection happening here. Young morons who recklessly expose themselves likely suffer little to no symptoms, or if they do they almost certainly recover. They then get to reproduce for the next 20 or so years.

On a related note, pointing out the rare case of a young person who comes down with the virus and gets seriously ill or even dies seems like intellectually dishonest fear mongering to me. The facts are that the younger you are the less likely you are to die or become seriously ill. I get the need to ge the young to take this seriously, but one should also consider young with fragile emotional health who may be caused unnecessary distress seeing these rare anomalies being emphasized.

The argument for the young to take this seriously should maybe be more emotional/moral rather than rational. By that I mean, the young need to be told they have a moral responsibility to those who are at risk which means they need to do what they can to avoid being spreaders, and in the unlikely event that they do need care, they would be using scarce resources that maybe could have saved a life had the reckless young person not necessarily exposed himself.

Obviously the young are often immune to both reason and moral arguments, so only so much can be done there.

Yesterday's update:

So after a "bad" day this is semi-encouraging. If they can keep this up they should be able to get their hospitals back under control at some point.

I think you need 2-3 days of reverse trends to be meaningful. I've seen other seemingly good days followed by very bad ones, so it just simply came down to timing of death. Multiple people one day hung on until the next day.

I'm still really concerned for Italy...been six days in a row they've seen at least six hundred deaths per day.. 683 has been their average during that time.I would like for it to get to maybe half or more of that and for at least a week and on downward trend before even considering breathing a sigh of relief.

Spain is in dangerous territory as well...their numbers the past few days seems to indicate they are getting hit almost as hard as Italy.

I think he has always been clear about warning everyone that what is happening in New York is going to happen elsewhere, and that everyone needs to prepare, which is why we need more action from our federal government.

I think he also makes great points about the federal government being able to act to direct and accelerate putting the machinery of this country to work to make ventilators and other equipment, for the good of all our citizens. He's not promoting these ideas as some sort of New York only proposal or legislation, they are just being hit super hard right now before anyone else.

The idea that they will have the luxury of all this extra unneeded medical equipment and supplies in a short while is a nice fantasy, when in reality it's going to be the other way around for awhile. But hearing him talk, I have absolutely no doubt that if whatever excess resources, expertise and manpower they do have down the road, they will do everything they can to help other states.

There isn't enough in our reserves to cover what he is asking for. It is very selfish for him to make this ask publicly. New Orleans is screaming for more. I know in Ohio they are looking to see what additional help they can get. New York isn't entitled to everything this country has. There are 49 other states.

New York Population: 19.54 Million
United States Population: 327.2 Million

We just can't send all of the supplies to 1 state. That is not a fair ask for him to make. I know NY has a need. I truly do. They should not ask for everything.

The visualizations below use the exact same COVID-19 data from John Hopkins except that the data is now normalized by dividing by the country or state population. The data is presented as confirmed cases per 1,000,000 people,

Dow you're saying a lot with very little.

What is the context of "that come after us"?

He asked for the equipment they need. I saw that part.

Anyways, the idea that states have to compete for this stuff, should not be happening.

It doesn't get much more divisive than this.

Let's drop which states need the most equipment for now. The point is that as a nation, we have nowhere near the amount of equipment that we're going to need. Which is why I'm surprised that we haven't actually used the DPA.

And how can you blame Cuomo for being selfish when he was essentially told that states must fend for themselves?

This is a supply issue, not a coordination issue. Simply put, we do not have the supply to meet the demand. I am thankful for the many companies that have stepped up, but it will take time for them to produce.

This isn't a Democrat or Republican specific problem. This country was caught with its pants down when it comes to resources. I hope we learn from this and make sure our reserves are stocked.

Perfect Dirk! Great find

Best chart I've seen, it'd be good to get a direct link for updates.

US looking most like Germany, which is good news.

California have done a good job.

New York, New Jersey, Louisiana look like Italy. These places need the humidity to ramp up asap

It doesn't really make sense to withhold many ventilators that could save lives now and continue saving lives for a future life that needs saving.

Does it look better if by holding back you save 1,000 people in another state two or three weeks from now when they could have been used to save possibly twice as much in a hospital needing them today?
