Joker should definitely sit this last game out. They completely fumbled their one seed and they’re not going to get it anyways. He has the mvp locked up.

No? They have a real chance to get the 2-seed and HCA against a very tough Minnesota team

Why would he do that?
1. He doesn't care about the MVP. He'll be happy if his boy Luka wins it.
2. The 1 seed is still within reach, though probably won't happen with Dallas having nothing to play for. But the 2nd seed definitely is. Minnesota has to beat a Phoenix team that can still avoid the play-in.

Do the Nuggets even send out anything for Jokic? I doubt it. Jokic probably not a fan of campaigning for MVP

Mike Malone was pretty vocal about Jokic’s winning MVP at least in past years. Besides that I’m not sure I remember much of a MVP campaign

Kinda crazy that the 5 best players in the NBA (including Embiid) are international.

Not too crazy when you look at the decline in talent coming out of the NCAA.

I know one thing, Giannis can't be MVP. When you have a sharp shooter like Dame to rely on you can't be MVP. .

What's Luka's case over Jokic?
Jokic has better numbers and led the better team. And he's still the clearly better player overall.

Luka has more total points scored, leads the league on PPG by a big margin, is second on APG and has more steals per game.Luka is also ahead of Jokic in both on EPM and DRIP, something that is rarely mentioned. He's also first among all guards in RPG and top10 in defensive rebounds. Luka also beat numerous all time records including for example the first ever +33/+9 /+9 season, the consecutive +30 point triple-doubles, the Mavs franchise single season points scored, a record which stood for 40 years etc. He also has the highest PPG+APG+RPG since 50 years.
On top of everything he also had historical games like the 73 points game, the fourth-most in NBA history or the legendary 50 points and 15 assists game on Christmas Day, only the second ever 50 pts / 15 assists game etc.
The Mavs also had a much worse luck with the injuries. This becomes very evident if you check the most played line-up by both teams.

Very impressive. I had Shai and Luka as the top 2 candidates, either one of them is deserving. However, judging by the straw poll midseason its clear the media has already made up their mind who is going to win this year. Hopefully next season these two candidates will get the legitimate consideration they rightfully deserve.

Re: NBA MVP Discussion Thread 2023-24 (Part 5: So who's winning MVP? )
This is far from a pity MVP for Jokic seeing his otherworldly stats and team success…I just think the writers feel they did him dirty last year and that might be yet another factor working in Jokic’s favor. It would be asinine to view this as a “predetermined pity MVP” but I’m sure some haters might. And they will look foolish.
I do hope Luka wins one at some point. Just too great a player and I’m sure he will be the favorite going into next season.
Great season Luka and Shai but Jokic is the MVP. There’s certainly no shame to losing to a guy who one day might be knocking on the door of top-10 status.

Jokic has won 9 more games than Luka this year. That’s not a small amount. Also doesn’t compare to when Jokic won in 2021. As matter of fact Jokic actually won more games than Embiid and Giannis that year.
