The Lakers won't be catching up the next 2 years. Thanks, Kobe.

This is absolutely terrible. All this work to clear our cap space and it gets gobbled up by Kobe for another 2 years.

I was listening to Cowherd and the progression was hilarious

It was first that lakers didn't want him to hit open market. They signed him now because coming back from injury his value would be lowered. Cowherd guessed 2 years 30 million on discount coming off the injury. He said it would of been 2 years 40 million in the offseason after Kobe came back strong from the surgery. So they would be taking a risk but saving money possibly signing him now.

Then the actual numbers came in. Lmao

Who else expects Pau to sign a 2 year 15M per year contract after Kobe's paycut?

Well this is a terrible turn. Lakers are playing themselves out of the lottery and locking themselves into mediocrity for several years. The worst thing is I could see them trading more first rounders to surround Kobe with more talent to have a valiant charge towards a second round exit.

Unbelievable, I was expecting this though. It's a business for Kobe and he wants his money worth.

He should have signed for 10-15 million, 30 million max for 2/3 years. This is ridiculous. No way Melo is joining you now, it's going to be so tight to even win a ring.

Kobe made the Lakers a lot of money. I think it was the right thing to do. He is still playing at a high level. It's nice to see a player play 20 years with an organization in today's time with the new breed of players hopping onto different teams to go ring chasing.

If the goal is to make money, keeping Kobe does that for the Lakers. I'm sure he's worth more than $25MM/year in merchandise and all that.

But I don't see how they're going to get anywhere near the finals until his contract is off the books.. unless players start taking less money to play in LA. That's never happened before.

It's not just a legacy thing, the Lakers can possibly come out on top in two years from a business standpoint. From a basketball standpoint, yes, the contract doesn't look good, but from a business standpoint? Bryant makes a lot of dollars for the franchise. Do we know how many a year on average? Would be cool to find that info somewhere.

At least we learned that Kobe has given up on getting a 6th ring.

i like him as a player but he comes accross as a greedy so and so

no way should he be the highest paid player in the league and dirk and tim duncan all took less money so their team can make room for other players

very greedy imo

I think the Lakers dont see any good FA could sign with them anytime soon and made the safe choice.
I would rather tank than signing Melo.
As a Lakers fan, I think it is higher than I expected but I am happy about it.

Well, as a Lakers fan, I'm disappointed they couldn't even wait to see how he plays on the court. They can't be paying him elite money (even if it is a bit of a pay cut) if they don't know for sure that we'll even be amongst the best at his position. I want him to retire a Laker too, but the FO had leverage here.

Everyone realizes that the Lakers made a lot of money thanks to Kobe, the Lakers owe Kobe more than 279 million dollars he made so far in his career. That's not the point. So stop bringing that up.

The thing is, people are disappointed because he could have gone on one or two last runs. Build a beautiful squad around you from scratch, go over the top and spend as much as possible. Now you got Kobe for 24 million and Nash (does he retire/buy out whatever). He takes up TOO MUCH money.

35 year old Kobe, coming off a torn Achilles. 2 years, $48mm.

Can we all agree now that these Lakers aren't anything close to the Jerry Buss-run Lakers?

Kobe is a big reason why the Lakers will get 3 Billion dollars from TW. It's the least they could do.

Thank you! Is this the only guy that gets it?

Yes it would have been nice for a pay cut but as a fan i've seen this guy for 17 years 5 tittles and 7 finals. Plus countless records broken.

I'm ok with this and have him retire as a Laker and hopefully on his terms.

Everyone hating on Kobe and the Lakers for this wish they had a player like him play for 17 years with the success he had.
