Why do we need to disrespect the Raptors supporting cast to appreciate what Kawhi is doing?

Kawhi will have more win shares than any Michael Jordan playoff run ever, he also beats 3peat Jordan in just about everything statistically. This playoff run and finals series in particular has made Kawhi pass up 96-98 Jordan and move comparable to 1991-1993 Jordan and 2012-2016 LeBron.

They had the toughest road of anyone to the title and did it behind Kawhi's Jordan-esque play, especially against Philly. I already thought Kawhi was a phenomenal superstar level player but he surprised me being able to reach an even higher gear, arguably an all time great level for this postseason. Before this year I thought Kawhi was a top 7 player but guys like Durant and Curry were definitely better. My opinion has changed. I wouldnt move Curry or Durant any lower but Kawhi has leaped above both.

Kawhi based on the playoffs is the best player in the NBA right now. He just is. Durant is a close second (from an individual talent perspective; curry has more impact), but Kawhi gets it done from everywhere on the court, physical or non physical play. He takes contact, fades away, finishes through contact and dunks on people, one handed fakes, makes quick decisions and typically the right decision....again, very Jordan-esque. Durant by comparison has every kind of jumpshot in his bag, but is a little worse of a penetrator because of how high his dribble is and isnt nearly as strong as Kawhi.

"Why are people hating on Kawhi??"

Gee, I wonder why

I'm sorry, was there something glaringly wrong in my post? Do you have an intelligent rebuttal at all?

Kawhi just had an incredible run. He lead his team as the clear best player through arguably the 3 best teams in the NBA other than the raps. Especially against Philly, he had a juggernaut series as a scorer and has looked quite unstoppable at times. Whatever the defense has given him, he has taken and still beaten them. He has had some down games because hes been battling an obvious injury....but still has looked amazing. This playoffs it is not at all absurd to think he is the best player in the NBA. Do I think he will be the best going forward ? No, I actually still think Giannis is about to be "the guy" for the NBA. But in these playoffs Kawhi has been the best player. I dont see the debate really.

You said he's "having one of the best postseason runs in recent memory".

LeBron's past three playoff runs are better. Durant's past two runs are better. Toronto barely beat a Philly team whose best player was badly injured. If Embiid was healthy Toronto is at home watching right now.

You can say LeBron's past 3 runs are better. I'd probably agree with 2016 but 2017 and 2018 I disagree for reason already given in this thread. That's why i brought up the level of competition. LeBrons competition in 2017 and especially 2018 was a complete joke compared to the east this year, hilariously far apart in talent at the top. So he rests on defense the entire eastern playoffs against weak talent and gets swept in the finals. Not too impressive to me. LeBron has had many moments earlier in his career which showcased his ability on offense and defense much more. I dont care that he beat the lowly Pacers, or the 2018 Raptors which basically any playoff team can contend with, other starless celtics. Nobody cares that he beat those teams and put up huge numbers, especially when he proceeds to get swept by a team that James harden and Chris Paul took to 7 games. Even the 2017 cavs didnt do much better. LeBron had great boxscore numbers, who cares. The entire system revolves around him like it did Westbrook and Harden over the past few years, why should anyone be surprised he accumulates those kind of numbers. His teams were not playing winning basketball, they were playing LeBron ball. This is quite different than when he was in Miami and the culture of winning was clearly better.

So many people, like you, think that putting up huge boxscore numbers on teams that are not seriously contending or know they have no shot is impressive. It's not. Basketball is a little smarter than that. Opposing teams and coaches know they can let the player like lebron tire himself out and then knock him out. It is exactly what Kerr said, verbatim, in the 2017 finals. And again in 2018. Even when curry got 47 the other night, I didnt care much because I knew they had no chance and the Raptors were playing the hand they were dealt, since curry had no running mates that game except Draymond
Why is it impressive to watch a player put up huge number when the other team is allowing them to tire themselves out because you dont have a real shot of winning?

This is laughable and stupid. Please don't use stats like WS when you clearly don't even understand how they work.

MJ has 6 playoff runs with a higher WS/48 compared to Kawhi this year (actually Kawhi had a much better WS/48 in the playoffs his last year in SA). In any case WS isn't a great stat in general

Kawhi's passing / playmaking is nowhere near the level of first 3 peat MJ (who also scored quite a bit more than Kawhi)

He's much closer to 2nd threepeat MJ... but even then MJ scored more and was a better passer. The closest year is probably 1998 given MJ's reduced passing that year....Kawhi probably has some efficiency advantages (very hard to adjust for era/rules), but MJ scored at much higher rate. (44.5 / 100 vs 39.8 /100). Defense might be a wash (Kawhi plays great defense in spurts now.. but (understandably) his defense has fallen off quite a bit with his higher offensive responsibilities)

I really, really like Kawhi as a player...but your ridiculous over the top stanning is getting really dumb

The 2018 Cavs were terrible outside of LeBron. It's no suprise they went from the NBA finals to bottom 3 in the league after he left. Last year they beat the 48 win Pacers, the 55 win Celtics and the 59 win raptors. No one was saying that Toronto sucked until LeBron swept them.

He had 51 points in game 1 and would've won if his teammate wasn't a moron and remembered the score. That was 51 against a full strength Warriors team with Kevin Durant. What Kawhi is doing is really great, but some people are being ridiculous, calling it the GOAT playoff run, etc. Not saying that you've been doing it, but there's been a lot.

Kevin Love was injured, and they traded George Hill and Korver. But of course, you only point out LeBron's departure.

Kawhi has been very good, but this thread is be epitome of fans being dumb. The raptors have a great TEAM, they are excellent even without Kawhi playing. They’ve had insane production out of role players like Powell and FVV, and great contributions from all their key guys. Giving Kawhi so much credit is some ESPN first take dumbassary when they are winning because of team play. Give the other raptors some credit, and stop thinking Kawhi is carrying bums Lebron style when that’s hardly the case.

Kevin Love is always hurt. He was hurt last season, and he was hurt in the playoffs too. He played 22 games and they went 7-15. They sucked before they traded Hill and Korver. They were 4-12 with Korver and 2-11 with Hill.

But yeah, if only they had Korver and Hill they would've been great

He won the "you made Lebron look mortal" MVP that Iggy won a year later.

You guys forget the fact that kawhi played bad game 1 or else his avg for that series would've been 20+

Do you guys remember kawhi checking in while LBJ is at the foul line and he looking over his shoulder mouthing wtf and sighing

Ballings7 wrote:Kawhi is easily better.

Why? Mainly due to defensive longevity, consistency, and impact, and then just being a more skilled and reliable jumpshooter from the assortment, and also being a better off the ball player offensively.

The difference there is where there is clear separation between Kawhi and LeBron, and it goes to Kawhi. Is LeBron more adept at chasedown blocks than Kawhi? Yes, but that doesn't make him a better defensive player.

Kawhi's a superior FT shooter.

Kawhi's been a more consistent and efficient jumpshooter, whereas LeBron is more streaky and can at times just be off for a whole game or stretches of games. Kawhi has a jumpshot package in terms of reliability and strength of ability, at the level of Kobe/Jordan.

Kawhi has a 3P shot capability and consistency at the level of few we've seen in his mold of a wing player. A benefit of the Spurs offensive system and staff, and the newish NBA.

Also, due to how Kawhi was utilized early on with the Spurs and again with their system, he expanded and polished his game off the ball.. similar to how Kobe/Jordan were used without the ball in the triangle.. putting their length, size, and awareness to use.

LeBron, regardless of team, never really has been an off the ball player. Partly due to team make-up influencing that, but also influenced by LeBron himself, his mindset and preferences for the offense, I'd say from what I've gathered, and always having the ball on offense initially, or getting it mid-shot-clock, on majority of the team's possessions from game to game. The most you can say he played off the ball was with Miami.

LeBron is a more adept slasher, finisher, and passer up to this point, for obvious reasons.. LeBron's 3P has gotten individually better since 2016-2017 and forward, but not at the level of Kawhi's has been since 2013-2014, and especially since 2016.

The drop off offensively between the two, to Kawhi from LeBron, isn't too much, overall. Since Kawhi is still an elite, all-round offensive player himself. Both have their areas offensively where one is definitely better than the other -- but both can really do it all offensively.

Defensively, again, there isn't really a contest or comparison.

To get a bucket in the paint, or set up someone else, I'll go with LeBron (up to this point).

To get a defensive stop, I'm taking Kawhi every time, and every time since 2012.

To get a bucket, in the form of a jumpshot or trip to the line, I'm taking Kawhi.

jumpshot or scoring in the paint its still 2 points though,, is 1 more valuable ?

There was not a single opponent that had a top 20 player for LeBron to face against in the playoffs. Not one. Who did LeBron have to guard the entire 2018 playoffs? No one until the finals. It should be noted however that LeBron was playing with another player who was arguably as good as any of the opposing east teams best players, in Kevin love. But Cleveland played a crappy style of basketball. Their team was built to let LeBron pile up huge numbers and not play defense. Talent wise, they easily should have won the east even last year against the teams they faced. Not a single team one of their opponents could have been favored against them until the finals. And in the finals, they got annihilated, series wasn't remotely close. LeBron started bitching over one play that did not even guarantee they would win the single game they had a chance in, game 1 when the warriors werent even taking them seriously. It should be noted that after that play the game was tied and went to overtime, and LeBron acted like they already lost!! This is an aside, but that was some of the absolute worst leadership I've ever seen from someone who is among the greatest players ever. Can you imagine Kawhi Leonard or any other great player dwelling on one play so much that they would break their damn hand and then give up??!!! The playoffs are 7 game series!
2017 and 2018 were not performances that were particularly impressive to me given the context. He faced nobodies throughout the east run and in the finals his opponents game planned him perfectly and let him tire himself out and wrecked him. Didnt have an answer at all and showed terrible leadership. LeBron has done incredibly impressive things in the past so I dont know why I have to pretend that these were great when I know better and have better examples to work with.

Those east teams were mediocre talents and everyone knew it. The Raptors, again, had no one near Kawhi Leonard and it is almost historical fact that talent wins in the playoffs. Which is why the Raptors never had a serious shot of winning before Kawhi got there.

If you don't think 2017 and 2018 were impressive performances then that says everything that needs to be said.

LeBron haters are the most obsessed people on the planet. It's bordering on mental illness at this point.

And when your opponent doesn’t have their best player it makes it easier to win

ehh, the W's you see in these finals are more in line with normal historical contenders than the ones with Durant. These raps team would be competing for titles against any non-GSW+Durant, ridiculous, over the top-4 stars-2 MVP's-DPOY superteam

I agree with this sort of thinking, therefore we are in agreement that the king won the last two titles

And currently has 5

Well done Raptors

Next year they get a worthy opponent with the healthy king and some scrubs
Stop being so disrespectful.

Kawhi has a washed up offensively marc gasol, Siakam who is pretty much another larry Hughes, Lowry with a broken hand and he's beating historic teams like 76ers bucks warriors. Kawhi is having the goat playoff peak, lebrons only argument is longevity.

I don't really mind if you want to believe that current Kawhi is better than peak LeBron but the bolded part is pretty much just nonsense outside of the Warriors who are missing their most reliable playoff performer and are playing in their 5th finals in a row overall.
