Lol she splayed in an exhibition game as a gimmick (she was a goalie) and allowed 2 goals in 5 minutes. Stop.

A goalie is a gimmick position? News to me. I'd like to see you play goalie in an exhibition game. You'd probably cry when the puck hit your pads.

The only way she'd ever make it into the NBA is if the NBA allowed people to pinch throw free throws...
My NBA Live Raptors team won the NBA championships, so they should in real life as well.

Reading comprehension for the win there buddy.

Her playing in the exhibition game was the gimmick. It was big news at the time.

She was horrendous relative to the men (but the best woman goalie in the world). There is a reason why she was not asked back despite the outpour of attention.

Who has the reading comprehension? You put she was a goalie in brackets, which implies that's what made it the gimmick. Nobody ever said she was great, it was just showing that she played in the NHL. Exhibition or not, she still played at the highest level of men's professional sports.

You can try discredit her accomplishment however you want. I am sorry that the reality of it upsets you.

Rheaume played exactly one period of one exhibition game, clearly as a publicity stunt, and wasn’t very good giving up 2 goals on 9 shots. That was her entire NHL career.

Nancy Lieberman also tried out for the NBA back in the 1980’s. I believe it was with Utah.

What does performance have to do with her actually playing in a sanctioned NHL exhibition game? I can show you men's goalies that have been lit up too, that doesn't change the fact that they had the opportunity to get lit up. She let in 2 goals in 1 period. Not the worst performance in the NHL either.

SMH just stop. You don't know what you're talking about.

She did not play in the NHL. That would infer she played actual time in the league in games that counted. They let her suit up for less than a period of an exhibition game because the Lightening were a **** expansion team and trying to draw attention. I remember watching the clips on Sportscenter to this day. Again, she was very bad and there was no intention of her actually playing for the team. It was a gimmick. A sport like basketball where the woman would have to play on the open court only enhances the divide.

Well we could start with the fact that exhibition games don’t actually count. I’m assuming when this thread started the OP was talking about a female player making the team and playing in the actual games that count in the standings.

Writer George Plimpton also played goalie in an NHL exhibition game once when he was 50 years old. Again, he wasn’t actually going to make the team.

I think you’re failing to differentiate between a publicity stunt and somebody actually making a team based on merit. It’s a very big difference.

They don't actually count toward an official record, but they are still professional games where players get paid. Summer League in the NBA is considered the first professional game of a rookies career, despite the games not counting. It's a moot point to the fact that she wore an NHL jersey in a game with NHL refs and other NHL players in an NHL stadium. I'm not saying she was Wayne Gretzky, I was just pointing out that his happened.

You can discredit her accomplishment by calling it a publicity stunt, but as a former goalie myself, I know that what she did is incredibly hard. Taking slap shots from players in the NHL, exhibition or not, is not something that anyone can just do for a publicity stunt.

Unless somebody has a contract specifically stating that they’ll be paid for playing exhibition games, that’s actually incorrect. Contracts start when the actual games start. If you’re trying to out for the team, and you have a non-guaranteed contract, that contract will only going into effect if you make the team and start playing in the real games. Players trying out and playing just exhibition games generally get paid nothing.

Regardless, you’re really jumping down a deep rabbit hole here in order to make some sort of point. And that point isn’t a very good one, which I’m sure you already well aware of.

What do you think my point was? That women are as good at men at sports? Or that Delle Donne could play in the NBA?

Because I think you're missing the point. It's simply a fact that a woman played in an NHL exhibition game.

And you're wrong about players not getting paid for preseason. Absolutely wrong. They sell tickets to pre-season games, meaning players get paid under labor laws. It would be illegal for them not to pay her. Non-guaranteed contracts only mean they aren't guaranteed the full contract value. If they play a game, show up to practices they get a portion of their salary because I don't know, it's their job.

The point is that there is a massive chasm between saying "a woman played in the NHL in the 90's" and the reality of the situation which is that a woman was used as a publicity prop in goal for a few minutes of an exhibition of an expansion teams opening tour.

You have no point. Let it go.

Wow I had no idea her stats were that good or that she was 6’5”. You’d think no way in the NBA, but I’d love to see what happened if she went into a game.

When I was 14, we played a couple of friendly games against a pro women team which was a Euroleague level at the time. We beat them by 30 in the first game and a month later we destroyed them by 60+ and we were goofing around in the second half. The difference was so big that we could have beat them by 100. Their best player was one of the top Euro players at the time and she could only score when we allowed her to score.

There is no way any woman could ever play in the NBA, not even close. Its ridiculous to even consider it.

Grayson Allen won the McDonald’s All-American dunk contest. He’s pretty athletic, he hasn’t been able to stick in the league due to attitude problems.

Even the worst NBA player is light years ahead of any woman physically. There’s a big difference between a 6’5” man and a 6’5” woman (even at the same weight) in terms of strength, athleticism, explosiveness, muscle density, etc...

Sorry but it’s not happening as anything other than a PC gimmick. The NFL was also trying to promote a female football player at the college level a couple months ago. They even gave her a commercial.

Also, her shot might not translate depending on how fast her release is (I've never seen her play).

Comparing her to a rookie is erogenous because there are players in the NBA who are put in for potential. Elena wouldn't have any potential, thus, her being a bit better than a horrible rookie wouldn't be relevant (and she isn't better than said rookie player).

The undiscussed erogenous zone of comparing professional athletes. Putting the fantasy back in fantasy sports

You initially made this point, and then when multiple people pointed out to you that it was a publicity stunt and that exhibition games don't really count you went overboard trying to claim these games were far more important than they actually are.

Anyways, here's what Tampa Bay GM Phil Esposito was quoted as saying about bringing in Rheaume for a tryout:

I said, 'Guys, we're an expansion team. We're not going to win (anything) anyways. We need the publicity.'

You're clearly just guessing.

NFL, NHL and NBA players receive their salary for each week of the regular season only. Their salary does not get paid during the playoffs and they only receive a per diem in the pre-season, not an actual salary or game-check. The per diem is something to cover room and board for each day they're in training camp but they don't receive and actual check for playing in an exhibition game which is the initial claim that you were making. This includes those players with guaranteed contracts, non-guaranteed contracts and no contract at all.
