Euros are doughy. All he needs to do is lay off the vino and run some more laps. Top 3 player and Dallas is still insane for approving that trade (even though they got Copper Flagg out of it).

Depending on what type of wine, that is probably the best option. I would guess the extra calories are more from pounding beers.

Should have put booze instead of vino. Wasn't trying to be specific.

You can't count Coop in that equation (which you likely did).
With or without Coop, Mavs still won the trade
How do you figure?

He will probably catch less rebounds and his attack style will suffer from the size/strength loss. He doesn't need more speed or explosiveness, at all.
But his gas tank should last the 4 quarters, so I dunno if it's a net plus or minus.
I remember rookie skinny Luka expelling freakin PJ Tucker (who is built like a brickhouse) like he was a graceful mosquito. It's not the extra fat what makes Luka strong
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

Luka is a master, maybe the best along Jokic, at getting defenders off-balance. I don't remember the play/s you're referring to, but it could be just that.
Fat aside, Luka has been more muscular, "jacked", off-season.
And body mass alone (even from fat and not lean muscle, and obviously to a certain extent) increases strength.
Just look at Olympian lifters, powerlifters and strongmen at the absolute weight division, not needing to trim down to make a weight class.
Luka will lose strength and size, probably improve agility and explosiveness (does he need them?) and, hopefully, his gas tank will last the whole game.
It's a net plus or minus? We'll see.

Re: Skinny Luka incoming
Mariusz Pudzianowski was lean as fuc for instance, and there are olympic weightlifters or discuss throwers with low fat%
It's just that for most people, unless you win the genetic lottery, staying lean takes a conscious extra discipline and in those explosive sports isn't a neccesity.
Strongmen aren't ussually superobese cause they need some good stamina although the priority is strenght/size
Luka would lose strenght if he went into a huge calory deficit to go Cristiano Ronaldo lean but i don't think that's his goal.

Pudzianowski's success was largely because big z was competing in a different competition as the world strongman stuff was fractured back then. But none the less, yeah losing mass will hurt a player's power. That said, I can't think of a single player that we can definitively say losing weight hurt them. Maybe Kevin Love. But we've seen countless guys lose weight and come back better. Most recently Jokic who people had the same concerns about. So imo nothing to worry about.

Uhm, I think it has to do with their style of playing.
Kyrie i.e. wouldn't benefit for gaining a single pound.
Look at Jokic in 2020, his first MVP.
Look at him during this 2024-2025 season, his best so far. He's noticeably bigger.
I believe Luka's "bag" is closer to Jokic's (dictating his own pace, getting defenders off-balance, bully ball...) than Kyrie's. Or Shai's, or Kobe's, or Jordan's, or... players benefiting from being very lean.

Jokic has lost weight, not gained.

Jokic 2021 (first MVP) and Jokic 2024 after his 104 points / 30 rebounds back-to-back.

Well he was in the sun more. Beyond that he might be holding some more water. It's hard to tell from the photos. Either way the biggest jump he had was from 2019 when he was fat fat to 2020. And his defensive stats blew up. If he's put a few back on, I don't think that's been critical.

From a fundamental standpoint it is better for a man to have nothing but be under the protection of Jesus Christ than for him to have everything he could ever want yet be completely without.

Pal, I don't want to be nitpicky and argue about Jokic in a Doncic's thread, I'm only pointing at it as an analogy.
You are totally right: his turning point was losing significant weight in the off-season prior to his first MVP.
But, since then, he has been bigger every season (more muscular, mainly, but he carries more fat too) and that's also very noticeable.
You can search for more photos.
Luka's style of playing, IMHO, is pretty similar (weird start-stop timing, getting defenders off-balance, bully-ball) to Jokic's.
We'll see how this physique suits him. I'm confident he will gain weight during the season, though. Under his trainers and nutritionist supervision, not by eating junk food and having a drinking problem lol.
