https://nypost.com/2020/03/25/influencer-reportedly-hospitalized-with-coronavirus-after-licking-toilet/

A California social media prankster claims he was hospitalized with the coronavirus — just days after posting a video of himself licking a toilet bowl for a nauseating online challenge.

The TikTok personality, known as Larz, reportedly posted footage of himself in a hospital bed on Sunday, according to the Daily Mail.

“I tested positive for Coronavirus,” the 21-year-old from Beverly Hills tweeted on an account that has since been suspended, the outlet reported.

It comes just two days after the prankster, who goes by the social media handle GayShawnMendes, posted a video himself on Friday running his tongue across a public toilet as part of a bizarre — and widely criticized — “Coronavirus Challenge” on social media.

The craze — seen mainly on TikTok, a video-sharing platform — spurs users to post footage of themselves licking everything from toilets to grocery store produce.

It wasn’t clear whether Larz’s apparent infection was linked to the stunt.

I think he has always been clear about warning everyone that what is happening in New York is going to happen elsewhere, and that everyone needs to prepare, which is why we need more action from our federal government.

I think he also makes great points about the federal government being able to act to direct and accelerate putting the machinery of this country to work to make ventilators and other equipment, for the good of all our citizens. He's not promoting these ideas as some sort of New York only proposal or legislation, they are just being hit super hard right now before anyone else.

The idea that they will have the luxury of all this extra unneeded medical equipment and supplies in a short while is a nice fantasy, when in reality it's going to be the other way around for awhile. But hearing him talk, I have absolutely no doubt that if whatever excess resources, expertise and manpower they do have down the road, they will do everything they can to help other states.

New York Population: 19.54 Million
United States Population: 327.2 Million

We just can't send all of the supplies to 1 state. That is not a fair ask for him to make. I know NY has a need. I truly do. They should not ask for everything.

I don't disagree with what you just said- obviously no one state deserves more immediate need than another state. I think what Cuomo is trying to do is make very clear the state of emergency caused by COVID-19. He is stating publicly what his state needs, certainly other states should do the same. He is also more or less stating the obvious that if his state gets over the crisis and has available ventilators, etc. he will send them to other states who are currently lacking. The timelines in different states are such that New York may peak first and then hopefully be declining, even as other states may be entering peak periods. So it would be sensible for him to offer this.

Hopefully this will actually kick our federal government into taking some of the actions only it can do to help different states, although that does not seem to be happening. That is one of the main things he is pushing for in his press conferences. Not just for New York but for all of America at this point.

To those USA realgmers living in the suburbs or gated communities and under quarantine/lockdown/ whatever sugary words your politicos used... can you still go out of your house and in your garden? What is the limit? Can you go walk and pace in the street? I'm sure that's not possible to those in apartments inside the cities so asking those outside.
Rural Louisiana perspective: I can go outside whenever without any problem. It's never realistic to walk anywhere here; there's no sidewalk or shoulder, just a straight drop into drainage ditches with barbed wired and woods on the other side in places.

Every time I go past the ballpark, I see people all walking the same speed on the track to maintain distance. Most of the stores are closed. A lot of small places are still open but only let in one customer at a time. I normally go to the post office in the middle of the night, and it's still open. The grocery stores are still open. I don't know how it is most places, because I'm avoiding most places, trying not to spread it.

In theory though, if you were bored you could drive around to parks, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. It's very much an honor system here. Also, a lot of jobs are still open. Accounting firms, legal firms, pawn shops, game stores, coffee shops, and the massive petro-chemical industry.

I like to think the reporting is doing their best, but it doesn't seem accurate, and the numbers are probably much greater.
Considering there's not enough test for people yet it one indication.

I agree, I mean I think most medical personnel certainly want to provide accurate reporting, and most cities/counties/states at this point recognize the danger and importance of providing accurate information. But even in the best case scenario, with this many patients coming in there is going to be delays, lag, etc. There's just not normally such a need for daily numbers across our entire healthcare system.

To the Australians in here, I've got a little update from inside one of the major private hospitals in Brisbane.

As I've said before in this thread, my partner is a physiotherapist specializing in outpatients in a hospital. It was only yesterday afternoon that they've finally decided to stop non essential patients coming into the hospital which is my partners field. She was calling for this for weeks but they didn't stop until now due to money (they actually admitted this).

They've split the physiotherapists into 2 teams. One clean and one dirty. The clean team will continue to help patients without Covid 19, while the dirty will obviously focus on the opposite. They've all had up to date training on what they need to do in ICU. Physio's are critical in doing manual breathing techniques and since this is a respiratory disease, they play a vital role but are ultimately at the hands of the Doctors.

They have created 3 extra ICU's within the hospital with all bar one being dedicated to Covid 19 patients. They expect to handle the next 2 weeks but think after that there is every chance they won't be able to cope with the amount of people coming in. At that point they will be asked to do a minimum of 12 hour shifts.

From today they have been asked to wear leather shoes as normal sneakers (think Nike air max's etc) are known to carry to the disease. They have to wear different clothing to work and get changed at the hospital when they arrive and when they leave. When they get home, they've been asked to wash their clothes immediately.

Many of the team were in tears already just at the thought of all this happening. I'm in complete shock and utter disappointment in the governments around the world for their lackadaisical approach to shutting this down until **** hits the fan. Too many people have already lost their lives and many more will because our leaders are too afraid about the impact on the economy. I'd happily trade all my savings to save lives.

I would like to know more details about the basis for his predictions, but obviously would be great if true-

https://nypost.com/2020/03/24/coronavirus-turning-point-in-us-will-be-earlier-than-predicted-nobel-laureate-says/

The US will see a turning point in the battle to contain coronavirus sooner than expected, according to the Nobel laureate who correctly predicted when China would get through the worst of its crisis.

Stanford University biology professor Michael Levitt, who won the 2013 Nobel Prize in chemistry, said his models don’t support predictions that the virus will wreak months or even years of social disruption or cause millions of deaths, the Los Angeles Times reported.

There is a good video in this article going into what is happening in this hospital.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/25/nyregion/nyc-coronavirus-hospitals.html

A refrigerated truck has been stationed outside to hold the bodies of the dead. Over the past 24 hours, New York City’s public hospital system said in a statement, 13 people at Elmhurst had died.

“It’s apocalyptic,” said Dr. Bray, 27, a general medicine resident at the hospital.

Across the city, which has become the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, hospitals are beginning to confront the kind of harrowing surge in cases that has overwhelmed health care systems in China, Italy and other countries. On Wednesday evening, New York City reported 20,011 confirmed cases and 280 deaths.

I'd guess that he'd be focussing more on the attrition rate of the exponential growth. There's a natural attrition even without intervention (herd immunity). Factoring in intervention measures and rates will curb dramatically soon. Even just modest quarantines will curb the growth, there's just going to be a 2-week delay that's going to seem like "we did everything you said and it's still not working!"

There will be point in a few months where we get used to the problem and move on to talking about NBA girlfriends, it seems impossible right now though.

Yes, because pretending problems don't exist is how you solve them.

In any case I'm not going to be baited into an argument for the CA forum. Take your fake moralizing there if it's so important to you.

Hold up here, stating reality is now considered cynicism? We are in desperate need of supplies. This is a national emergency and your complaining about reality? A certain segment of people here still dont believe this more than a flu because thats what they heard elected officials tell them. A dose of reality would help them.
