My favorite in the world has everything working against him, your favorite has everything he could possibly want in his life and on his team.

You could argue for either of them, but people like to spread this award around, and KD's scoring streak gives him momentum. I think KD will win this easily.

I have no opinion on who SHOULD get the award, but if we are discussing who WILL get the award, at this point it is definitely KD.

KD has earned MVP to this point, and is nearing a lock, but I don't understand why people are impressed with arbitrary stat streaks.

Let's say if LeBron had the same number of points over the same number of games but instead of 25 each night at least, had one more 35 game, but one 15 point game, that would somehow be much worse? :-?

This will be the first season in forever that Lebron didn't earn the MVP. (I always thought he could have and should have earned it in 2010-11)

KD should get it too, he's had a significantly better season than Lebron.

KD didnt win this years MVP, he took it, seeing as he was not the favorite coming into the season.

Using that logic, does it mean that Durant did not just fail to win the past three seasons (MVP's), but that he lost them all (as the favorite going into all three seasons)?

This has been a great season by Durant. Well deserved MVP.

It's all over. I concede the case.

There was a very short period of time on Friday night when I actually felt LeBron might get right back into the picture, seriously so. But three things had to happen, and only one of them happened.

First, LeBron and the Heat had to beat Minnesota. Nope; Minnesota won and so LeBron's night ruined and attempt to make up games on OKC fails.

Second, OKC had to lose on national TV to Houston. That happened.

Third, Durant had to fail to tie the MJ streak. With one minute or so left to go in the game, this was on track to happen. Then Durant hit two late threes and he matched the MJ streak.

That's it, barring an OKC complete collapse now or LeBron going Super Saiyan for the last 10 games or something.

Had all three things happened on Friday -- and they took place maybe within like two hours of each other or so (end of MIN/MIA and end of OKC/HOU) -- then I think you could have seen a real shift in the conversation. Streak over, MIA in third place in the league standings and only two or so back of OKC in the standings, Durant and OKC losing on national TV and not looking great while doing so, all of that. Miami leading the East.

Didn't happen, it's over.

Congratulations to Kevin Durant on his first MVP trophy. It is well deserved, and should he keep his PER and WS/48 where they are at now, he will join an incredibly elite list of players to have had a 30+ PER season (only 7 have done so) and a .300+ WS/48 season (only 4 have done so, I think). This is the elite of the elite, the best ever, and Durant is deservingly about to join their ranks.

Bravo! What a year! I'm happy for KD and for the league.

The race has been over for a while, KD is very deserving of the MVP. However, I do want to point out one thing. I think what LeBron has had to deal with in terms of Wade missing so many games sporadically and having multiple different starting lineups has gone very underlooked. With all the the talk of Durant having to play without Westbrook, people are forgetting that at least he had some sort of continuity in the starting lineup, LeBron has dealt with new faces playing alongside him every other game.

Not to mention Lebron has constantly dealt with recurring injuries.

It's the sheer consistency which makes it impressive. Plus it's not like he's only just hitting 25 a night, or forcing the issue on poor percentages - he's probably scored 40+ more than he's scored under 30 in the streak, and he more often than not does it efficiently. Their record in the streak has been excellent too and he pretty much sits out every 4th when they are up big (ie - doesn't pad stats).

To not drop below 25 once in half a season (and counting) while only three guys in the league AVERAGE 25 a game? I think that's a bit more than arbitrary.

Poor LeBron, having to deal with sporadic injuries to himself and team mates, fatigue, inconsistent line ups.

Honestly, this whole thread has basically been "Durant is clearly the deserving MVP, but..." like somehow we need to justify why LeBron is still the best and hasn't won it.

What else do you want people to say? Pretty much everyone's admitted Durant's the MVP.

You want people to say things they don't believe?

I just don't think it needs a disclaimer.

Not really a disclaimer. Almost everybody here has acknowledged Durant's historic season and thinks that he deserves the MVP. It's more about having a general discussion about the two players. This is the MVP thread but really right now it's serving as an overall comparison thread.
