A center that cant rebound or defend is like a pg that cant pass or dribble. It doesnt mean that a player is terrible, but that they cant fulfill the primary duties of their position. No player like that is worth building around or a max contract. Lopez would hold negitive value before the ink dried.Stebo_SSK wrote:Only when D12 is on the line to go to the Nets have I ever heard anyone argue anything positive in favor of Brook Lopez. Not a bad player but when a guy cant defend or rebound at the 5, that is a serious issue. Its like Nets fans are trying to convince everyone that Lopez is a better option. The trade the Nets had on the table was pure bull.

Let's say that the Magic was able to tank anyways and got the #1 pick, how long is that pick going to take before he becomes a star player? You are going to pay Bynum 18-23 mil a year from 2014-2018 while you wait for a 2013 draft pick to develop? By the time that draft pick is fully developed Bynum's contract may already be ending. A core of Bynum and a high lotto pick simply doesn't make sense. You can't hope the second best player to be a prospect that you hope would pan out while Bynum is paid a large sum of money and the team most likely in luxury tax territory. As for getting a FA in the 2014 offseason, many other teams will also try to do the same as many of the older star players will be available. The big 3 in Miami has an ETO, Kobe, Pau, Dirk, and Pierce's contract will end by then. There is going to be a huge scramble for those FAs. The problem? The younger stars like Griffin and Love are all locked up past 2014, so most likely you will only find a star over the age of 35 to help you. With what you purpose, it would be:
Bynum
High lotto pick
An over 30 FA
As the main pieces for the Magic to contend. That team is not likely going to go anywhere and the Magic will have no picks or prospects to upgrade their roster. Getting Bynum is better, but it's hardly a slamdunk offer over what other teams are willing to give.
Dwyane Wade, Anthony, James and Bosh made significant impact on their team by their 2nd year. If the Magic gets a top 3 pick in 2013, I don't see why this won't be the case.
A quick look at 2014 FA, Monta Ellis will be expiring, Carmelo Anthony can waive his ETO to sign a longer contract.
In addition, I've been hearing good things about Nicholson, the magic draft pick this year.
So in 2014, there's a probability that the Magic roster will consist of Bynum, Anthony/Ellis, Nicholson and their 2013 draft pick. That's a damn good core.
So that scenario combined with Magic management's desire to rebuild in a flash makes the Lakers offer that much better.
To me Houston offer is essentially an opportunity for the Magic to cherrypick the young players they'd like to keep long term because they can't possibly pay them all after their rookie contract expire. So far, I don't see any of Houston's young prospects who can potentially be better or even equal to Bynum in terms of impact. Do you not agree?
This hypothetical lotto pick that the Magic gets from tanking could become another Wade, or it could become another Beasley. There is no assurance that if the Magic tanks they will definitely get a player that wouldn't bust. When it comes to high lotto picks it's a lot about getting lucky. If everyone expects you to draft that guy you are not likely to draft someone else so that if the pick didn't work out you're not responsible for it.
Getting a 2014 FA is also another variable the Magic don't have much control over. Ultimately it's up to the FA where he ends up and all Orlando can really do is pitch the idea that they can win with Bynum as the best player. If none of the impactful FA likes Orlando then the Magic will come up emptyhanded.
You're saying that the Magic should get Bynum on the basis that 1. They should tank for a lotto pick in 2013 2. Lure a great FA in 2014. None of these have any guarantee that it will work out. The chance that a top 10 pick would become a star is about 20-30%, and there is no way on earth you can claim this and that superstar likes Orlando and will definitely sign with them in the offseason. The uncertainties that come with your plan is no different than the uncertainties that comes with the draft picks and prospects from Houston. The only difference is they don't have to pay someone 20 mil a year while mulling over their decisions. If the Magic gets Houston's package, they can be patient and see how the team should move forward. If the Magic gets Bynum, they will need to be in a hurry to assemble the best team to work with Bynum before he takes up 40% of the cap.
The biggest issue with getting Bynum is that the Magic has to immediately contend, and if they mess up over these two moves(2013 pick, 2014 FA goose chase) then they will just become another treadmill team. There is almost no margin of error unlike the Houston package where it wouldn't burn you if a pick or a prospect doesn't pan out.

Bulls matching Asik, means Houston still needs a center. i can see more emphasis on this now.

If Orlando wants future flexibility and draft picks, they should take the Houston deal. They don't even need to involve the Lakers.

Was this the only open contract offer Houston had? Only asking bc one of the rumored hold ups to a Dwight deal was Houston having to potentially wait 3 days for teams to match their offer sheets so they knew how much cap space was available.

Re: Lakers - Rockets - Magic Talk trade
I wouldn't be surprised if Bynum being injury-prone isn't something Morey is fine with, since if he misses most of one season with a young team built around him, the Rockets would have a good chance to replicate what San Antonio did getting Duncan when Robinson went down, or Miami did getting Beasley (obviously he didn't work out as a player, but they could have traded that pick for a huge return, since many people had Beasley ahead of even Rose and projected him as a dominant offensive forward or, and this would have been seen as a reach, selected Westbrook or Love 2 and 3 spots higher than they went and ended up with a perennial all-star. Westbrook does a lot of the same things Wade does and neither can hit 3's, but Love would have been seen as a nice stylistic fit then and now with Wade)
Where's the D?
