Trades aren't zero sum. Wiggins was harmful on the Wolves. They are better off with D-Lo. And the Warriors are better off with Wiggins.

The answer is they didn't need to but wanted to do D'Lo a favor for playing hard for them and making them look like a well run, over achieving organization when they literally had nothing. You could make an argument that his performance with the Nets was one of the main factors that made them look like a more attractive spot than the Knicks.

They obviously weren't going to keep D'Lo. Minni wanted him but they were over the cap and couldn't give him the deal he wanted. So the Nets did D'Lo a solid and got him a MAX deal while sending him to an elite organization.

Side note: What also made this trade possible was the Lakers overpaying Mozgov in 2016 (4 years, $64M). So the Lakers dumped his salary to the Nets and D'Lo (#3 overall pick just 3 years earlier) was considered the asset the Nets got for taking on Mozgov's terrible contract. The Lakers needed to do that trade to clear room to sign Lebron.

Had the Lakers not foolishly signed Mozgov to that terrible deal, they could've either kept D'Lo or used him as an asset in some other trade. They wouldn't have needed to use him as an asset in a salary dump.
Brian Geltzeiler: You see Mark Jackson getting a head coaching job as early as next year?

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.

Getting rid of Wiggins was a requirement for Minny

I wouldn't disqualify it as baseless. You'd have to think that the people announcing that a player is being shopped are the people receiving the calls, not the ones making them. Announcing a general "We're shopping X player" would likely drive down market value.. now if they were trying to pit teams against one another, then I'd think it was sourced from MIN, in order to convince others to get their best offers in

Issue is that I haven’t seen any serious rumours surrounding D’ Angelo Russell being shopped, though. This coincides with the fact that Minnesota functionally did not have a front office set in place until Tim Connelly brought in some staff.

As I said, he could be traded depending on what Tim Connelly decides, but anything up until this point has effectively been speculation. I say this as someone who would prefer moving D’Angelo Russell (if the price is right), it really just doesn’t add up timeline wise that rumours would exist.

That tracks, I'd only say that because the draft is coming up, that could be the reason why its one of the first things a new regime would do. Also, if I were a new regime and DLo was on my team, it would be the first thing I'd try and do too :dontknow:

That's exactly how Wiggins is feeling right now.
All the haters better keep that same energy when he turns into a star in Golden State.

4 pages in, I was the first to call this trade a win for the Warriors.

WHERE ALL THE HATERS AT NOW???

:wordyo:

Wiggins is only getting started.
Stardom awaits for the 27 year old NBA champ.

FWIW, it was Jerry West who nixed any KLove-Klay deal. He threatened to resign if the Warriors made that trade, at least that's the story. So I'm not sure if it was the Wolves call or not.

They got a lightly protected First-Round Draft Pick out of it.

they got a highly protected (top 20) FRP that turned into a 2025 second rounder when it didn't convey.

But if Wiggins is still in MN, what changes in him for him to start playing D & competing? (In this scenario, they’d likely draft Ball/Wiseman over Edwards as well)

No doubt he was key for Golden State, but if you were to replace DLo with Wiggins this season on the Wolves this past season, I promise they do not make the playoffs.

To be honest Golden State saved the Wolves by not trading up for Edwards. That’s the what if I’d me more interested in. What if GSW had Edwards instead of Wiseman/Kuminga?

Thats true..something snapped for him while in gsw. I see it akin to when a young player is on the olympic team for the first time and sees how guys like kobe, bron, wade, etc perceive and prepare for games. Wiggins learned how to be a winning player here.

I dont think gsw had the assets to trade up to #1 at the time.

I believe it also allowed them to get DeAndre Jordan which I remember being a priority for KD and Kyrie for some reason.

If flip didnt pass away, the wolves could have been a play off team earlier.

Wiggs
Lavine

Surrounded by great vets like kg, prince, and rubio was the right idea. Imo, i think kg did want to help build something long term in minnesota. He still talks highly of those 3.

Then thibs burned the house down.

i doubt they'd be much better off. wiggins has quickly become the most overrated player in the nba. kuminga has some talent, but hard to see him being a 'core' player on a winning team, ie a perennial all-star type talent.
