Tough position for Silver to operate around. In the same way Morey probably didn't intend to impact the NBA on this scale through a single tweet, I think it's wise that Silver also doesn't say something which unintentionally fragments international relations on an even bigger scale. The whole situation is outside what an NBA commissioner should even have to consider. This is a matter of politics and he's just a commissioner of a basketball league.

The thing I find most strange about this is how the Chinese have completely overreacted. It's juvenile-- like something Trump or Kim Jong-un would do.

The underlying story here is that we shouldnt even be there. They are harvesting peoples organs and killing people in concentration camps, and they have the audicity to cry about an accurate comment made about what is going on in Hong Kong. FOH. Good. Cancel all NBA activities there.
Money talks, dude. The NBA would probably do an NBA cares event inside those concentration camps if the price were right.

Google "xinjiang muslims" and see what you find. It is unimaginable what they are doing to that population, and we are fortunate that that level of insanity doesn't exist in the US or Europe at such scale.

As for the HK protests my thing is if the world accepts that HK people are historically Chinese and do not want to separate then there's no room to have 2 systems they have to accept big daddy's dictatorship eventually.
They're not cow-towing to China to outsource their manufacturing, they are doing it because of China's consumer power. Even if they each spend 20% of what a US NBA fan spends on average, their sheer number and the popularity of the game means that they'll still contribute a substantial amount to league revenue. The basketball related income (BRI) is almost evenly shared by owners and players through collective bargaining, so one can understand why Fertita, the Nets owner and players like Harden are bending over backwards to keep that cash flowing.

They overreacted to you but in their mind they just pulled a power move on the NBA and American capitalism in general. NBA teams are owned by billionaires who have enough power to control American society and policies. Let's see what influence they will have on American politics when their money is adversely affected.

I was really hoping that South Park would get wind of this. I'd love to see the next episode continue the China stuff and add the new NBA issues.
You know they arent done yet
Yes, which is why I am hoping the next episode adds the new NBA issues as I mentioned.

NBA cancels the All-Star Game in North Carolina because they couldn’t decide which bathrooms to use but cuddle up with a communist/socialist country that executes people for being gay or transgender. They say they promote free speech, allowing players to express their political views but kick out two fans for doing the same thing, holding pro Hong Kong signs during a game. Which ever side of the aisle you're on THIS is socialism/communism. I'm happy people are finally getting to see what its really about.

What is funny is america is the least racist country in the world. Only the media goes out of their way to play up racism here and pit races against each other. Unfortunately people fall for it.

Its hilarious when people on the left are SO ENRAGED at China but are OK with someones Trump hat being ripped off their head, or being attacked in public. But please, go on about juvenile behavior though.

Ofcourse, i was just trying to say that worst case scenario the NBA has other global regions they can develop and get them to spend on their product.

Do you object to US companies in general doing business in China?
I'd suggest that the NBA's relationship with China could actually have a positive influence on the country.

This isnt overly true. Physical racism may be down but systematic racism is still alive and well. And its only gotten worse with the current administration in office

How could it not be anticipated a prominent NBA figure might be critical of China? at some point? I mean, they're ready to sever the relationship because of a tweet from one GM? If the bar is that low, there was no way this could work.

Yup. I think this is definitely a power move and to be honest, this has shook the entire NBA. The commissioner, the owners, the players, the coaches, ESPN, etc. they all have no idea what to **** to do and are scared ****.

There are plenty of places more socialist than the US who also enjoy a higher level of press and business freedom than the US. This is about authoritarianism.

I feel like Morey's legacy has taken a completely different turn. He is going to be remembered for this event and whatever happens next will define his entire life.

It's weird how only people with horrible politics worry about this sort stuff.
You don't find people who are pro-equality going "oh well, this player/coach/executive may be a horrible racist or homophobe but he should keep his opinions to himself so I can support him guilt free."
