I honestly feel like we are witnessing a most important event in the NBA history. It's pretty insane what is going on, and this goes far beyond basketball.

I am just hoping the Nets and Lakers get out of their quickly and safely at this point. I think the NBA is very smart to keep relatively quiet right now, until both teams are back safely. I am hoping for greater support for Morey and less support for China by the NBA in general, once the teams are back.
This is a disaster. Amazing how different things would be right now had Morey not clicked 'tweet'.

Being responsible for costing the nba millions If not billions. Derailing decades of nba progress in China. Hurting his team financially and maybe in derailing their season or have long term effects basketball wise. May lose his job and be blacklisted. Might be hated by all the nba players getting pretty penny’s in China. So on and son on.
Yikes.

When there is a lot of money at stake, there is also a lot of people's livelihoods at stake, and big ripple effects from decisions like that. In reality you have to tread very carefully, and attributing that tact to simply greed is shortsighted imo. You can't just insult a whole country out of principle, and forget about the consequences.
About standing up for human rights, it's not the NBA's job to do that, when the government of their country, or pretty much any other 1st world country, isn't even doing it. And yet they've come as close as telling the Chinese government to go take a hike as anyone has.
I thought Silver handled it as well as it could possibly be handled, to be honest.
And I think most current critics against him, or Kerr and Popovich by extension, clearly come from some agenda from some other issue.
I agree with the bold 100%. But the fact that they love to do it with every other issue, but not now. People dont like the hypocrisy. The big difference now is money. Shows they dont actually care about the stuff they yell at the world about when their money is on the line.
Sounds to me like these people you mention have a problem with the content of those other issues, not with the consistency of their involvement. In any case, let me insist that they've come closer than any other big company (and there's been many in this situation in recent years) to stand up to China's boycott threat. And it's not like they chose to get involved in this situation anyway, it fell on them out of nowhere.
Like I said, I'm more than content with their response.

Maybe.
But I also am of the opinion that nothing like this was intended by his tweet and the issue is more because of a ridiculous reaction from China trying to use this to score political points.
They decided to politicize and make a big deal about this. Honestly I see it as a shot in their current trade dispute with the US.

Even beyond China, I think in most Asian cultures, someone like Morey would have resigned already. There would be too much shame on what he has caused that the "right" thing to do in the East Asian culture would be to resign/apologize and disappear for a while.

Which ever side of the aisle you're on THIS is socialism/communism. I'm happy people are finally getting to see what its really about.
There are plenty of places more socialist than the US who also enjoy a higher level of press and business freedom than the US. This is about authoritarianism.
I don't know what more socialist than the US means, nor do I care because I dont live there. China is a communist country with an authoritarian leader, both things are ****.

Very good point. This is clearly an overreaction on their part. But they're clearly trying to send a message.
China's ego right now is off the roof

It's starting to look like China is going to accept nothing less than Morey's head. At this point, Daryl Morey quitting is the only face-saving way out of this mess for all parties. Freedom of speech does not equal 'freedom from consequences'.

You'd have to be naive to believe a European power willingly gave up that much wealth for moral reasons.
We aren’t in the 19th-century, the Opium Wars are dead and buried, and Hong Kong is not under Europe’s thumb. There isn’t even a threat of that.
The geopolitical struggle for power by European countries never dies.
I agree with a lot of things that you write on this topic but here you are making mistake. Most of european countries that were colonial powers in the past aren't capable of being that today (Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy), Germany expand her influence through economy and EU integrations and in UK you have opposite tendency where their old elites and whites in rural areas want to go out of EU so that they can be glorified Singapore. You have neocolonial tendencies in France but they don't have ambitions in eastern Asia, their goals are recolonization of Africa, Middle East and Caribbian islands. Those kind of ideas are becoming more popular among whites in USA , both among elites and people but calling it european colonialism is a reach . There are some sentiments about Hong Kong that have colonial background in media but that issue today doesn't have anything with colonialism and China is using things from the past as a weapon to deflect any criticism of their agressive behaviour toward their neighbours or any criticism of their policies against minorities. When they are agressive in South China Sea they talk abot Japanese occupation, when they are doing things that are against agreement between them and UK in Hong Kong they talk about colonialism, when they are criticized about how they treat minorities they talk about Opium Wars, Boxer Rebelion or use War on Terror/Anti PC narratives.

They just won't be flooded with rich Chinese trying to launder their money and it might take a while to set up the proper logistics channels. China is developing fast and their cost of living is increasing substantially and eventually they won't be the manufacturing giant they used to be.
As for the HK protests my thing is if the world accepts that HK people are historically Chinese and do not want to separate then there's no room to have 2 systems they have to accept big daddy's dictatorship eventually.
They're not cow-towing to China to outsource their manufacturing, they are doing it because of China's consumer power. Even if they each spend 20% of what a US NBA fan spends on average, their sheer number and the popularity of the game means that they'll still contribute a substantial amount to league revenue. The basketball related income (BRI) is almost evenly shared by owners and players through collective bargaining, so one can understand why Fertita, the Nets owner and players like Harden are bending over backwards to keep that cash flowing.
Ofcourse, i was just trying to say that worst case scenario the NBA has other global regions they can develop and get them to spend on their product.
They can develop other global regions while also maintaining their revenue in China. The NBA or anyone for that matter would rather add to existing revenue than have to substitute for it.

I'm not suggesting anyone is detained (never know), but maybe there are unhappy citizens they need to worry about.
