This is just another messed up issue caused by the U.K. like the mid-east for example... Should have never given HK to China 20 years back. We could all see this coming one day once they gave it back

Re: China cancels NBA stuff / Silver issues statement (pg1) /Ongoing discussion...
China isn't going to be detaining any NBA players--short of an NBA player committing a crime.
Morey will get fired...eventually.
They're developing an exit likely via Yao.
It's about money and will be resolved. In NBA terms and its relationship with China, this is a short term bump that will be forgotten over the long term.
The other stuff, no comment.

Adam Silver needs to get the Nets and Lakers the hell out of there. TODAY. Screw the games, they are in a hostile environment and who knows how far the CCP is willing to take things.

Something like this was inevitable. If it werent Morey it would have been something else.
Timing could have been different though. Morey did it at the worst possible time on many levels.

I specifically mentioned your differentiating Han and non-Han when it comes to speaking about issues. I feel like you are only half paying attention to what you write, and I’m being generous.
Umm... Yeah... I was saying the treatment of non Han Chinese people in mainland China is abysmal. Are you disagreeing with that?
Like seriously here you're speaking in some weird tongue that only you seem to understand...

To anybody who thinks the CCP will *do* anything to American NBA players, you are vastly underrating how savvy they are.
Like they would make that kind of a misstep when they are currently playing chicken with the league.

I'd suggest that the NBA's relationship with China could actually have a positive influence on the country.
Business and Sports coincide.
Business and Politics do not.
Sports and Politics do not.
What's the common theme here? Keep politics the **** out of business and sports.
It's weird how only people with horrible politics worry about this sort stuff.
You don't find people who are pro-equality going "oh well, this player/coach/executive may be a horrible racist or homophobe but he should keep his opinions to himself so I can support him guilt free."
"Horrible politics" is subjective. This is why you don't get it.
Politics will always be controversial. It's ok with you if the NBA takes a stance that coincides with your ideologies but would it be ok with you if the NBA pushed an agenda against abortion or pro-gun or anti-illegal immigrants?
Just as you assume that pro-equality is simply a good thing, I could easily debate against that narrative to open your eyes as to why it's garbage. I'm not going to do that here because it's not the place. The point being that these issues are not as black and white as you all make them out to be. Politics is controversial, leave it alone.
The NBA made this bed and now they don't want to sleep in it. None of this would happen if they stuck to basketball and not try to be progressive and woke. It's a joke.
I also find it ironic that the fans and posters here are starting to say enough of this China stuff, lets just get back to basketball! Well this is essentially the same argument that I've been making all along by saying get ALL of the political crap out of the game. You guys are already sick of this when it doesn't support your narrative but it's all fine and dandy when it does?
Don't be hypocrites. Either go all-in SJW or stay out of politics completely!

Its not unheard of to get fired for speaking up about a political issue. CNN fired a journalist (Marc Lamont Hill) for speaking out about Palestine a couple years ago. I know that Isreal didnt DIRECTLY put public pressure on CNN but it looked a bit strange
I dont think think the response is overboard. They are simply laying down the rules or enforcing the rules re their engagement w the NBA.

Professional sports has always dealt with political undertones in the United States, going back to the 1940s.

Even beyond China, I think in most Asian cultures, someone like Morey would have resigned already. There would be too much shame on what he has caused that the "right" thing to do in the East Asian culture would be to resign/apologize and disappear for a while.
Shame by offering support for Pro Democracy protesters in HK?? What is shameful is the laughable response by the CCP.

Pretty certain that if it was that simple, he would've already resigned. China wants him fired and likely banned from the NBA. The middle ground will likely be an official firing.

I believe that they did indeed tell everyone to keep their cool and let Silver take charge, which is a rational and wise decision for the league to take. I find nothing wrong with that. They are trying to calm down what has become an international incident while at the same time defend an employee's right to freedom of speech. It's a lose/lose situation regardless.

How about this analogy although I'm not sure of the equality in magnitude.
Speaking against their sovereignty is akin to making public racist remarks in America. How many examples of have we've witnessed of people getting fired or shunned for something they've expressed even years back? There are many examples of this in sports, entertainment and politics. Americans will do anything to try to bury you for something that you may have said or done 20 years back when it comes to race, but the Chinese are not allowed to react to something very sensitive to them right now?
Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequence.

True. I guess it’s all semantics how it’s officially presented to the Public, but I’m sure at this point Morey has packed up his office and he’s just hoping he will be able to return to the NBA one day

I can’t help but wonder how many posts in this thread are from the 50c party. Supposedly they fabricate 450 million fake messages per year, I’d be shocked if a few didn’t make it here.
