Semi-OT: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Discussion Thread III (Info. Post 1)

I have a decision to make today or tomorrow. I work in the mental health/substance abuse field. Half of my income comes from private work which has started telemental sessions. The other half comes from working a few days per week in an outpatient treatment center. For unknown reasons, probably greed, this center has not suspended group sessions with patients. We have 20 to 30 people in a small group room all sitting next to each other, and I personally think it is very irresponsible. They need to suspend group sessions and do individual only for a while. They ask two or three screening questions questions to group members but that's all.

Can you explain how you feel about the sessions or are they aware they shouldnt be doing the sessions and just are anyway?

The agency is aware of the concerns and dangers. I don't feel safe in a room with 30 people crammed in.

So what's everyone doing for the next few weeks? I've been working from home but during my downtime I've been playing COD, watching basketball highlights on YT, jogging on the treadmill a little and basically just being bored out of my mind. I know social distancing is necessary and I feel like I'm doing my part, but I'm going a little stir crazy here. Help.

You can still go out on hikes. Hopefully many people don't decide to do the same.

Ontario just closed its provincial parks. I'm going to guess a lot of people were bored out of their minds at home and wanted to go for a hike.

I use the free phone app Duolingo to improve my German (they offer tons of languages, even ridiculous stuff like Klingon), I'd recommend you give that a shot. It's especially useful for improving and expanding vocabulary.

All 30 MLB teams Donate


On Tuesday all 30 Major League teams donated $1 million to assist workers impacted by the COVID-19 virus. Wednesday, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman continued with the good deeds pledging $125,000 to Atlanta area shelters and programs to help combat the Coronavirus epidemic. Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Freeman will donate $50,000 to Atlanta Food Bank, $50,000 to Giving Kitchen and $25,000 to the Salvation Army.

Obviously, they're morons.

But who is really to blame for their stupidity? Them, for clearly not recognizing how serious this is, or at least, not recognizing that even if they don't get too sick from coronavirus, they could transmit the virus to someone who IS at risk? Should they be held responsible for the level of ignorance and/or selfishness they're demonstrating?

Is it their parents' fault for not instilling better values and teaching them how to properly prioritize things?

Is it the fault of American culture, that says we can do whatever we want whenever we want?

I find it hard to blame 21 year olds for being selfish morons without any sort of perspective on world matters, that's kind of expected. I think the blame is moreso on the people around them responsible for educating them and teaching them the appropriate values, as well as the culture that they've grown up in.

This is such a good post. Yes, this kid is making a (poor/selfish/etc.) choice, but not in a vacuum.

We need some analysis of why Beijing, Shanghai, etc were not impacted significantly with virus cases. To me, that is shocking given the evidence. The spread should have occurred before Wuhan was quarantined. China just closed Wuhan int'l airport Jan. 23, when cases are about 1,000 and deaths 20? Their stats are BS and its likely this virus had spread all over before that date. The lag you see in deaths is due to the carriers not infecting the vulnerable until later on (vacation/work trip duration, not interacting with them immediately).

Maybe adding some levity to this thread for sanity, but I used to work for the company that brews and imports Corona, Modelo beers into the US and when I went to the grocery store yesterday all the Corona brands were sold out, whether it was Corona Extra, Corona Light, Corona Premier, it was gone, yet Heineken, Stella, Bud Light, all those were fully stocked.
