In fairness, he sent the letter to the higher ups at the same time he leaked it to the Chronicle. The Navy has acted on testing and keeping those infected sailors at Guam in isolation. As a captain I understand his concerns but you cannot send a letter to the ones that make decisions above you and then mail the same letter out to news publications as if the Navy is not reacting to the request. He lost some confidence there.

I get why this is happening. He almost certainly knew the consequences of doing this and acted to protect his men; that's pretty amazing.

Especially considering being the captain of a carrier is a plum job which likely means you are marked for advancement.

Essential services includes health care workers, law enforcement and grocery stores, among many, many others. DeSantis’ orders also classified gun and ammo shops, laundromats, hardware stores and pet supply stores as “essential services.”

In a significant deviation from what experts advise, attending church services is considered an “essential activity." DeSantis would also permit many outdoor activities, including golfing, if practiced with social-distancing.

Havana, April 2 (IANS) Cuban authorities have said that the US embargo on the island nation has prevented a shipment by Chinese electronics giant Alibaba which includes of masks, ventilators and testing kits to detect the novel coronavirus.

"Things are getting ever more difficult for Cuba. Not even in times of a pandemic are Cubans allowed to breath easily," Efe news quoted Cuba''s ambassador to Beijing, Carlos Miguel Pereira, as saying to the local media, telling how the US shipping company hired by Alibaba refused to send supplies to Cuban ports.

The US company "refused at the last minute" to send the supplies to the Caribbean nation, hindered by the rules of the "blockade", as Cuba calls the economic, financial and trade embargo Washington has maintained against the island since 1962 and which has been strengthened under the Donald Trump administration.

The embargo prevents, among other things, the island from using the US dollar in international transactions, prohibits Cubans from buying a product with more than 10 per cent US components and establishes that vessels that dock in Cuban ports must then wait 180 days to enter US waters or ports.

However, "one of those shipments could not get to its final destination", the Cuban envoy to China confirmed, thanking the Alibaba founder "for having thought" about the Cuban people and "for the efforts he is still making for his foundation''s contribution to finally arrive at its destination".

Are you in California? I'm in Nevada* (said California on accident because that is where I live) and filed on the 24th or 25th of March (so last week) online and received the card they apparently send as well as have that account set up through Bank Of America and my weekly claim filed. The first payment is set to come next week (and some of my coworkers who filed a few days prior have already received their payments). The $600 payments will likely start rolling out around the time of the $1200 check (or percentage of the $1200 for those over 75K but less than 100K), so I would expect those by the 10th-17th for those with their 2019 taxes filed/linked to their bank account. But up to a month later for others.

I'm in California yea. Damn dude not sure what happened. I applied the 19th or 20th!

I don’t think we are cooking the books, we actually have one of the highest testing rates in the world, but NZ is probably doing better.

A significant problem in Australia now is what to do with cruise ships lined up on both the eastern and western coasts, although they are at least taking those who are ill off the ships for treatment. I think something like 10% of the cases In Australia come from one cruise ship which was allowed to disembark 2700 passengers 2 or 3 weeks ago. Also half the deaths are from cruise ship passengers, many of them from that one cruise ship in particular, a sister ship to the Diamond Princess from which one Australian fatality also stems; Japanese don’t count the latter vessel in their statistics.

Btw, Washington recovery rate is very promising. In a day or two it will jump over 10%. If it wasn't for those early outbreak nursing homes where lot of the elderly died, it could have even higher.

There's going to be a very unfortunate divide in the US between richer states with better healthcare and poorer states with worse healthcare.

Some of the southern states in particular are very vulnerable. There are small towns where the closest ICU bed is ~50-100 miles away

Additionally, poorer states have a less healthy populace and that will exacerbate things.

There's a fantastic book called "Medical Apartheid" that details the American history of using black Americans for medical experimentation, including as the basis for the field of gynecology.

Seeing that now the CDC is recommending the wearing of cloth masks in public. Personally it seems like it's out of order to recommend facemasks and not stay at home, but that may just be me. Curious to see what the enforcement level of this turns out to be.

I work in TV so sometimes enroll if I have a substantial break between gigs and it’s nearly impossible to speak to anyone even if there is a low rate. If you google how to speak to a person there are websites that will give you the combination of command numbers to hit to navigate the menus and speak to someone. That may be different now with the menu. Best bet is to use the contact link and send a message.

I just finished a show like the week before the first national social distancing guidelines were set and before the CA stay at home so I just beat the rush. And in my line of work they don’t have to check on the Circumstances for lack of work either so no real verification is required. Once they get to your paper work though you should receive any back-logged payments and hopefully they come to you soon!
