ESPN's latest "30 for 30" special will focus on the controversial '93 bowling brawl and subsequent trial which landed Iverson in jail with a heavy sentence, and almost derailed his career.

On Valentine’s Day 1993, 17-year-old Bethel High School basketball star Allen Iverson was bowling in Hampton, Va., with five high school friends. It was supposed to be an ordinary evening, but it became a night that defined Iverson’s young life. A quarrel soon erupted into a brawl pitting Iverson’s young black friends against a group of white patrons. The fallout from the fight and the handling of the subsequent trial landed the teenager—considered by some the nation’s best high school athlete—in jail and sharply divided the city along racial lines. Oscar nominee Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”) returns to his hometown of Hampton, where he once played basketball, to take a personal look at this still-disputed incident and examine its impact on Iverson and the shared community.

You can watch the preview by clicking on that link.

It is especially interesting because the filmmaker is from the same town Iverson is from, and has a front row perspective.

It premieres on Tuesday at 8 pm est on ESPN.

It also re-airs at 11 pm est, and on Thursday on ESPN2 at 9:30 pm est. That link also includes additional air times.

OMG he's wearing a tie! He probably wouldn't wear one for his own wedding.

Sounds like Iverson shouldn't have fought at a bowling alley and it was made into a race issue just to save face.

While I agree that he either shouldn't have been involved in the fight (it's still up for debate whether he was even involved or not), or have been surrounded by people who would involve themselves in a fight, race played a huge role in this. All of the blacks were arrested, and none of the whites were.

Also, the charges were brutal. He was sentenced using a charge that's rarely used, and was originally designed to combat lynching. He got two five year sentences for a brawl! Again, a brawl in which none of the whites were even arrested, much less prosecuted.

By the way, if you're referencing them saying the whites used the "n" word....I wouldn't be shocked if they did make that up to save face. However, it's not far-fetched that they did say it. When I was younger and more idealistic, I'm sure I would have thought differently. However, as I've gotten older, I've been shocked to see and hear how blatantly racist people can be, especially when they're irritated. It is nothing for some people to throw around the "n" word. And sadly, it's not just the stereotypical hicks who do it.

I heard this episode will show clips of Iverson playing high school basketball and football. They said it was absolutely unbelievable how good he was in both sports, and he didn't even have a senior year.

I plan on watching this tonight. I've been really enjoying ESPN's 30 for 30 series. My favorite so far was the one on Len Bias.

It has been pretty interesting, I was into it for the first hour but have become rather bored of it since then. Still probably my second favorite 30 for 30 that I've seen so far, only to the Reggie Miller, Winning Time.

All of these specials have been amazing. Just shows A.I.'s roller coaster ride and validates his instability now-a-days.
