Marvel Comics creates superhero-themed season preview

Post#1 » by Viol8tor Mode » Fri Oct 15, 2010 4:51 pm

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/10/13/espn-and-marvel-comics-to-team-up-for-superhero-themed-season-preview/
At this year’s New York Comic Con, Marvel Comics CEO Joe Quesada announced a partnership with ESPN to produce an extended series of promotional images featuring the game’s brightest stars and the staples of the Marvel Comics universe. There are 33 promo images in all (including one for each team) created by 31 different Marvel artists (including Quesada himself), and the first two to surface — both released at last weekend’s Con — are quite promising.

The first image parallels Kobe Bryant’s five-ringed mitt with the Infinity Gauntlet, from the comic of the same name. Also pictured are LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Durant, and a handful of Marvel types all vying for what could be Kobe’s sixth.

Additionally, we have a LeBron James-themed recreation of a famous Spider-Man frame:

ESPN has done enough (all the hype of Lebron leaving for years, the disgusting spectacle that was "The Decision", and their gushing over the Heat with "The Heat Index", non-stop coverage of all things Lebron/The Big 3/Miami, etc.) to praise LeBron and take shots at Cleveland. Gets old.

Agreed.

Couldn't they have just spun that into a group banding together after their leader left/died?

It's easy to say "Why if it's the truth?" when you are a fan of a team that will always manage to be relevant because of where they are located, but for smaller market teams, these shots are completely unnecessary.

...people are reading too much into the Lebron thing. Plus it was relevant to the full theme release, not like Marvel went 'Let's go **** on Lebron some more. That'll be fun!".

OnT: These are awesome, my first time hearing about/seeing them.

I didn't mind the LeBron image as much as the giant "Unamazing Cavaliers" title. I'm not a Cleveland fan, but was that part really necessary?

I suppose they could have tweaked it, but I still think it's in line with the Marvel/Spiderman comparison. It's essentially a fan drawing, anyway.

Damn, Rondo's headband being upside down is so sick. Great attention to detail.

That's no random chick, that's Ms. Marvel. She fits in with theme along with the rest of the superheroes you see there.

Is Kobe copping a feel of that female in the photo? Did he get consent?

Well, he pretty much is the best player on the Celtics at this point, and those are the 4 most likely teams to compete for the title.
