what the hell are the nets trying to do ? why are they taking on contracts plus renting Melo ? renting Melo is bad enough.

Now they're trying to build a treadmill team ?

I think Rip still has a lot of basketball left in him. Put him in a different situation, with a real offense, and he'll show it. I'm not sure what the Nets are trying to do here though. Someone needs to stop Avery Johnson. He can't do anything else besides coaching.

Brook Lopez
(PF)
Melo
Rip
Chancy

Is a pretty solid team. It won't win a title but its a top 8 team in the East and would fill up some seats.

Apparently it's dead. partially because they wanted Detroit to include a first rounder. keep dreaming... a bottom dwelling team like Detroit should never ever give up a high lottery pick just to dump salary. You can get franchise players with those picks.

Uhm... what? Billups has per36 stats almost the same as his Detroit days. He also has a 63% TS which is the highest of his career so far.

All of this despite a crappy start to the season.

Nets will most likely give up the Petro for 1st BS soon. That just plain stupid and they will realize that.

Wasn't Billups named player of the week for the West last week?

Timofey Mozgov
Amar'e Stoudamire
Carmelo Anthony
Wilson Chandler
Raymond Felton

vs.

Brook Lopez
Kris Humphries
Carmelo Anthony
Rip Hamilton
Chauncey Billups

That isn't even close lol. NY is a lot more desirable.

You really think the Nets are going to trade Favors, Harris, and multiple firsts to rent Melo? That's not a rational thought.

Wojo on the trade

# If Nets have a chance to get 3-way done for Melo, there's no way a desire to pluck another pick would stand in way. Everything's negotiable. less than 5 seconds ago via web

# DET wouldn't trade '11 pick, but would consider deal including Murphy-Petro for Rip to save $25M with team's financial woes, sources tell Y! 4 minutes ago via web

# NJ needs a 3rd team to move Murphy contract, but why would DET take Petro's $7M and lose an '11 lottery pick just to clear Rip's contract? 35 minutes ago via web

# As @Al_Iannazzone wrote, NJ-DET talked as part of Melo 3way. Talks died when NJ wanted DET 1st rounder AND dump Petro on them, sources say.

The Nets will only go as far as Lopez takes them and if he continues to play soft it's not going to be very far. He only averages 6.1 rpg, he averaged 8.7 rpg last season, and this season he has only grabbed ten or more rebounds during two games.

That team goes as far as Melo takes them.

And the Nets?

The Nets are crazy. If they surrender Favors and five first-rounders here — two of their own and three they’ve acquired in various trades — they would have paid an unthinkable price for Anthony and Harrington, whose mid-level contract is fully guaranteed through 2012-13 and partially guaranteed for two seasons after that. Jordan Farmar would be their full-time point guard. Their likely starting lineup would be Anthony, Harrington, Farmar, Brook Lopez and Anthony Morrow. Their bench would consist of Travis Outlaw — perhaps the league’s biggest new free-agent bust right now — and zero other useful assets. You don’t trade five first-round draft picks for that roster.

Especially considering this: The Nets, in this scenario, would have limited cap flexibility until after the 2012-13 season. Assuming an extension that pays Anthony about $20 million annually, this deal would leave the Nets with about $47 million already committed to seven players for the 2012-13 season — and that’s before you factor in any salary for Lopez, who will be due a new contract starting in that season. Add in a Lopez deal that will likely be pretty sizable, and you are up in the high-$50 millions — in other words, capped out.

Things get better in 2013-14, when Outlaw, Farmar and Johan Petro come off the books and the Nets can buy out Harrington for half his $7.15 million salary, but 2014 seems like a long way from now, doesn’t it? The new collective bargaining agreement could change this picture drastically, particularly if it involves a rollback of current contracts, but you can’t bank on that.

Even if Nets back off their stance to take DET 1st and Pistons agree to take Murphy+Petro, the only way this works is if one Detroit or Denver take on Outlaw or Sasha+Humphries or Sasha+Ross+Graham/Uzoh. The latter two wouldn't be able to work until Feb 15 when Vujacic's trade restriction expires; he can't be dealt with another player until then.

Nets need to get off Melo's nuts and look elsewhere
