Did Lebron James Proclaim himself as 'King'

Post#1 » by aura » Thu May 19, 2011 4:49 pm

... or was it given to him by someone else.

I always hear the term, "Lebron James, the self-proclaimed King" in far too many comedic programs, or just someone trying to bash James. I'm sure everyone here has heard this and if you haven't, just Google, "Lebron James self proclaimed king," and you're sure to find 100s of articles with authors using that term to water-down Lebron's credibility.

So I was thinking, I really do not remember him giving himself that nickname/credential. Even thought he IS a big douche, doesn't sound like something Lebron would do. Where did this start? Was it Lebron? Was it somebody else? Why do authors and television hosts always use it?

I always thought it was a reference to King James of the Bible, sounds like something Bill Walton or someone would come up with, not Lebron himself.

He gave it to himself, I believe it dates back to when he was in high school.

Ask Sheed if LeBron didn't look like the King when he blown the Pistons by himself.

It's a play on the Biblical King James

It's just a nickname referencing King James. When people call him the self-anointed King I can't help but feel that the reference just flew way over their heads.

As others have said, it references King James. So unless you believe that high schooler LeBron was the first person to make the connection between his surname and the historical figure (which would actually be pretty impressive), it didn't come from him. Of course, he certainly embraced the nickname well before he proved anything on the NBA level, so if you're looking knock his hubris, there's still plenty to knock.

Chosen 1 is just as bad, if not worse than "King"

&& I've got a few friends named James, none of them call themselves "King" James. I get that it has some historical value, but it's still arrogant as hell.

Because nicknaming yourself is weak.

Unless you're Shaq and you've already proven your ability to create great nicknames for others.

LOL remember last year Glen Davis wanted everyone to stop calling him "Big Baby" and instead call him "Uno Uno"? No one ever did, the only new nickname he got was "Fat Mamba".
