They don't have any bad contracts NOW but they might acquire one sometime in the next 10 years. It seems silly to waste it on a 5 million contract that the team can opt out of after this year.

You can only use it on deals that were on your roster as of July 1st 2011. Teams can't trade for a player and then amnesty - and teams can't use it on new contracts.

I didn't realize that. That's weird. So basically the amnesty is worthless for a lot of teams and unlikely to be used on a lot more. Shoulda called it the Davis-Arenas-Lewis Clause.

might as well

did this guy ever get any type of "additional" training from a big man great? Bynum certainly improved with his training with Kareem but I dont think Kareem will be doing any work with LA anytime soon, he seems pretty sour with Lakers mgmt in addition to how Bynum sorta blew him off after the 1st couple of years.

I'm just intrigued by his shot blocking ability. With a new emphasis on defense, maybe the Lakers could get 10-12 productive minutes out of him a game.

So was he waived or not? Based on what I've read so far this is just a rumor.

I don't care what anyone says... this guy needs time, then his fate as an NBA player can be judged credibly. He hasn't had a lot of time in the league yet, not only in MPG, but also hasn't been in the NBA that long yet for a young big man.

There just isnt anything there that makes him a rotation player. Hell if he was just 7'0 he would have already been out of the NBA.

Eh, I really disagree there. He needs a consistent shot with somebody, like over the course of a season, which assuming he does decent, would carry into the next season.

He's been sent to the D-league like 3 times, and Hamed Haddadi isn't exactly tearing it up as the backup center in Memphis.

This was confirmed by a Rockets beat writer. Thabeet has not been amnestied and likely will not be.

Not sure why peopel still talking about this.

Thabeet has not been amnestied. Only way that happens is if Nene is in the room ready to sign.
