Everyone already forgot about Rudy Gay?

Not since Christian Laettner, he set the bar too high.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

Lamarcus should go over Griffen. The more physical players, IE the guys who mainly dunk, don't translate as well to the international stage. LMA is a far better shooter, which spreads the floor and fits much better in the international game.
I also really like the idea of getting great 3 point shooters on the team. I'd still send Ray Allen. I don't care how old he is, he's averaging 20 ppgs and shooting 63% from 3 point range. I'd even consider Richard Jefferson for a similar reason, he's shooting 56% from 3, hitting 3.2 per game.
PG: Paul, Rose
SG: Kobe, Wade, Allen
SF: Lebron, Durant, Melo
PF: Bosh, Love
C: Howard, LMA

I know I have no Melo, Bosh, Amare, Pierce, Aldridge, Dwill and others who are arguably better players than some guys on my team but I think an olympic roster is about building the best team with defined roles and versatility to adapt to the many styles of game that international teams throw out there. Just filling out the roster with the best players when it comes to pure NBA stats has shown to not work on more than one occasion. As much as it appears to be on the surface an all start game when you treat it like one you are doing the team a disservice. All the best players don't always make the best team.
Uhm no, it has never been shown not to work. The years we have lost have been the years we haven't sent our best players. Your big men would be atrocious in the international game where you can't play physical and need to be able to shoot.

Starting 5:
PG: Paul (Passing/Pace control, defense)
SG: Bryant (Leadership, closer)
SF: Lebron (I'd have Durant coming off the bench for scoring punch in the 2nd unit)
PF: Melo (Internation ball, would excel at PF, as he did in 08)
C: Dwight
Rose, Wade, Durant, LMA, Love, Iggy, Deron
