In Asian cultures surname comes first.

The family name ("last name") comes first in China.

If it were the same here, it would be like "Bryant Kobe" and "James LeBron".

His Jersey reads 'Yao' because his name isn't Bobby Ming.

I only know this from manga/anime, that the surname comes first in China and Japan. Uzumaki Naruto and Uchiha Sasuke. If those names weren't spammed about a million times in the series, I would never have known. This should have been the first question on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". Right up there with the question about Hannibal crossing the **** Alps. PEACE.
