OT: Did Mainstream Media Ignore Barkley's Draft Warning?

Post#1 » by UN-Owen » Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:39 pm

Charles Barkley recently suggested the NBA may rig the draft lottery so the Nets wind up with the 1st pick...

viewtopic.php?f=32&t=1174846

I was curious about what some sports writers were saying about his comments so I headed over to Yahoo! sports...only there was no mention of it

Next I went to ESPN...and again nothing

I tried NBC sports, CBS sports, ABC sports...and still nothing

(admittedly, I only spent about 30 seconds or so at each site quickly scanning the headlines and columns, so it's possible I missed it, but...)

Shouldn't this have been front page news?

Here we have a former MVP, a Hall of Famer and one of the most popular players in NBA history hinting that the league may commit fraud to benefit one of its teams...and none of the major media outlets are covering it?

Again, if I missed it...feel free to provide some links and lock this up

But if the mainstream media isn't reporting this...then I thought it was interesting enough to warrant its own thread

That lottery isnt rigged. Do you realize how much the NBA would lose if this came out? You are talking about jail time and hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuits. Besides, almost every team has representatives in that room and they invite media all the time too. Why hasnt a single credible figure come out and admitted it? Some of these guys are assistant GMs who have been fired/let go. These guys arent paying hundreds of millions of dollars to play in a rigged league. Plus the amount of people you would need to pull off a conspiracy like this (NBA + Ernst and Young) pretty much guarantees a leak.

I know its easy for fans of terrible teams (me being one) to blame things on outside forces but the truth is that we suck because of our management and not anything else.

And Barkley really is an entertainer.

Barkely said that in jest. He was basically joking. Even if serious, it wasnt serious if you know what I mean. OP, why do you have to be so streaight & narrow. Its like you want everyone to talk about it and blow it up. We dont have to make a big deal out of everything someone said, espically when the event he was speaking of hasnt even happened yet

there is not going to be a media outpouring whenever Barkley talks crazy. Because he is that way all of the time. That is how he makes his money.

I still don't understand why people think the lottery is rigged. Team representatives are in the room when the ping pong balls are being selected.

A conspiracy to rig the lottery would require participation of every team in the lottery. Each team has a representative physically witnessing the actual lottery process.

It's basically an accusation that every team in the lottery is conspiring to give NJ the #1 pick.

Why would Ernest and Young rig the draft for a team that has 1/10th of its value?

cleveland getting the #1 pick when a person from the area just so happened to be in the draft (lebron); chicago getting the #1 pick with one of their own being in the draft (rose); cleveland getting the #1 pick from the clippers after lebron left them high and dry (kyrie); wizards getting the #1 pick after the owner dies (john wall)

stern's thought process:

fans would more likely come out to support one of their own(lebron and rose)

Here is the thing: Yes if many people knew about the rigging, then it would be HIGHLY likely for a leak to occur. HOWEVER, should the number of people involved in the rigging of the NBA be Stern and 2 of his top execs, then it is conceivable that it can happen.

Think about how many people are involved in a political campaign. Think of how many people are involved in the voting process for president. Then recall Florida in 2000. We have a president who may have won a "rigged" election. There has been no 100% damning evidence despite ALL the hands that would have had to be involved. All you need is literally one chance for a corruption to occur.
It is not like the ping pong balls drawings are televised. Even if they were, it is possible that some numbers may be repeated more times, thus not a perfect rig, but lets say the drawing for the first pick, the bobcats are supposed to have the "best" odds, but 1/2 their balls are not in the system. With the high quantity of ping pong balls involved it is not far fetched at all to see possible ways this can happen.

If each NBA team had its own ping pong ball colors, had the balls weighed before being poured into the device, and only used the quantity for their probability, then had the ball-popping viewed by a televised audience, THEN i would be on the "no-rig" side.
Numbers don't lie, people who use them do

Because their team tanks and gets the 4th pick.

Ernst and Young does five-six times in revenue what the league does. If ANYONE isn't taking risks on rigging the NBA lottery, it's them.
