Is Shaq the strongest in the NBA, history?

Post#1 » by djay » Wed Oct 3, 2012 11:39 pm

In the weeks before training camp, Howard worked out in the post while defended by Person and former NBA power forward Darvin Ham, also a Lakers assistant coach.

"I'll tell you what, Dwight is strong," Person said. "He is probably the strongest person I've ever had to stand behind physically, including when I played.

"I've been around [Shaquille O'Neal], been around Tim Duncan, been around David Robinson. Dwight is by far the most gifted when you combine strength, power, quickness and all the other ancillary things that go with a post guy. If he continues to work at the pace he's working now, he could be one of the best centers to ever play the game because he has that skill set to do it.

I know Dwight is a pretty strong guy, especially upper body but Shaq is on another level. He's just bulk and very powerful. Shaq has to be the strongest ever. Stronger than Wilt as far as his dominance physically.

Wilt ain't stronger than Shaq. Wilt wouldn't be able to face a prime Shaq. The guy is a physical monster on the block. He destroyed D-Rob, who's very physically strong, like a raq doll!

It's kind of a difficult question to answer because it's possible that there's a player out there that sat on the bench or never got the chance to play that could have been stronger than Shaq, but had no skills or were too immobile to play the game of basketball. Glen Davis picked up Shaq in a friendly wrestling match and slammed him into the ground. As far as star players are concerned, yeah, probably, and I'm a Wilt believer.

Bulk/size doesn't necessarily mean stronger, it just means Shaq was bigger, and IMO he probably was nowhere in the type of shape, strength and conditioning that Howard is/was.

I don't know about that. Shaq is 300+lb playing 44+ in the NBA Final so his conditioning is definitely elite. He just lazy but there's no question if he puts his heart into the game, he is a unique physical specieman. Most of the time, it's the bulky guys who are the real strong rather than the body builder. Like weight-lifting and strongest man show, it's normally the bulky guys that won.

I would say that it's either Shaq, Wilt or Artis Gilmore.

I am leaning towards Shaq.

Wilt MAY have been stronger, but he did not use his strength on the court the way Shaq did.

Wilt is overrated as ****. Playing with a bunch of puny, skinny guys. If Wilt faces Shaq in the low block, he's going to feel Shaq power. Nobody can bang with a 300lbs with momentum force throwing at your chest. And I MEAN NOBODY. It's not that Shaq was big but he played like a bully on the court. I watch Wilt, his game isn't as powerful like Shaq. Overrated as ****. I'm not even a Shaq fan but I must admit watching him over his prime, he is close to unstoppable as you going to get.

IIRC Ben Wallace said when asked what it was like guarding Shaq - "Go outside and push a parked truck for 40 minutes"
What is happiness? It's a moment before you need more happiness.” — Don Draper

Let get real here.. there had been NEVER a player like Shaq. He's just big and powerful. Straight up powerful! There is no in between. You either bang with him or you get out of the way. There is no IN BETWEEN.

Strength is not dependent on your mass or muscle weight. Wilt was powerful, and although I do concede Shaq may be stronger, Wilt was pushing 300 pounds in his Lakers days, so it's not inconceivable to think Wilt would be able to push him back.

If wilt was 300lb with that Lakers frame of his, Shaq must be at least 350lbs. I don't doubt Wilt was strong but going up against Shaq? No way man. I never seen a guy that play with power like Shaq. He doesn't do these fall away jumpshot. He simply like to bang you inside until he dunks on you. That's Shaq!

This is what you get when you get in his way.

The reason why Shaq was such an unbelievable physical specimen was because of his combination of gifts; speed, strength, quickness, coordination, it wasn't because of strength alone. Like I've said he may be the strongest, but he's not in his own class like you're implying. Sabonis, Ming, Rasheed, just a couple of players that have been able to at least competently guard Shaq one on one. And although he almost always had his way with them, it's not because of his strength alone; Shaq was an exceptionally skilled back to the basket post player. He possessed a ton of skills beyond just backing his man down. It wasn't just his strength that made him unstoppable.

Chamberlain seems to take a lot of fadeaway jumpers.
