During the media scrum for All Star Weekend in Houston, Dwyane Wade was asked about how this era of basketball will be remembered. He talked about how the 80s were owned by Magic and Bird, the 90s were dominated by Michael Jordan — and then had these choice words to say about his era and Kobe Bryant.

“When you look back at this era there’s going to be a lot of players that you can pick from,” said Wade “You can talk about their greatness. This is a good era for basketball, and it would be led by Kobe Bryant – who was the greatest player in our era.”

These are interesting words considering everything that his teammate LeBron James has been doing recently. James just ran off six consecutive games in which he recorded at least 30 points and shot at least 60 percent from the field. James also has three MVP titles and is easily the best player in the game right now.

However, over the course of the last 15 years, Bryant has accumulated more accolades — and probably more importantly — more championships. Michael Jordan was just quoted saying that he’d take Bryant over James simply because of the five-to-one championship differential.

Whether or not Wade thinks Kobe is the better basketball player is another question, but Bryant definitely deserves to be in the conversation of the best of this current era of ball players.

Wow, that's actually pretty shocking.

LeBron will mostly be remembered as a player of the 10s, just as Shaq was remembered as a player of the 00s rather than the 90s despite being drafted in 94.

I don't see a problem with this since Kobe has been a presence for basically the whole decade, winning championships on either end and having his best years right in the middle (06-08). In terms of the complete picture, I'd say only Duncan has an argument here for a sort of "player of the decade" honor, and his tapering off towards the second half of the decade gives Kobe the nod.

Kobe is great but sorry he is not the one. 2nd bananas and dudes with one mvp have never been considered the greatest.

Because it was.

Duncan never defended his title as the man. Kobe will always have that over him, that's what people are looking for when they compare these 2 head to head.

...because he was better. 2003 in particular was light years ahead of Kobe.

Except he wasn't.

He doesn't even have an argument for GOAT of this era unless you consider Shaq to be from a previous era.

I'd also say Duncan was a better player then Kobe.
He had a better Prime & Peak, similar longevity and won more Rings as the man.

Duncan / Hakeem

Tier 3 :
Kobe / KG

Duncan cant create his own shot, he won't win this kobe vs duncan debate.

But I realize i am on Real GM general board, the legion of Duncan. It's not in my best interest to argue for Kobe here.

Ah, so specific criteria that fits your narrative is all that matters. How convenient.

guards/perimeter players usually don't consider big men when talking about these things. no one ever mentions hakeem or shaq when talking about greatest players either for some reason.

Kobe whooped Duncan in 01 and 08. B2B in 09-10 was incredible.
