I don't like the way he plays. His shot selection in the few times I've seen him play seems pretty awful. The last game against Boston he put up some good numbers but it seemed like he was chucking and they were going in. I mean I guess you have to say he's scoring and rebounding, so that's good. I can see why Bobcats fans would like his potential because there actually seems to be some production. That shot selection though.. is this his normal game?

Bobcats with Mullens on the court are at -14.7 per 100 possessions. The 2nd worst value league-wide for any player playing 400 or more minutes in this season behind his teammate Ben Gordon, who has -15.5 per 100 possession.

There are things like bad and there are things like extremely bad, Mullens is the latter.

The nice thing I noticed about Mullens is how well he spaces the floor. The game is changing and having a stretch four can be a valuable weapon. He's also been more aggressive recently. He plays for the Bobcats so people bashing him probably only seen him play one or two game if at all. This is 2nd season of consistent playing time and I've noticed an improvement. If he can continue his improvement he will have a nice career.

In defense of Gordon, he's never on the court in garbage time, which starts relatively early when the Bobcats are involved.

There's a decent point here. One area where Mullens doesn't suck this season is that he is a pretty strong defensive rebounder. He isn't Kevin Love/Ryan Anderson or anything as far as being able to hit the offensive boards AND be a 3pt floor spacer, but those guys are outliers, not common, so the weak offensive rebounding is at least acceptable.

As far as the player himself, Mullens is really bad. 5+ 3PA/g at 32% is bad. The raw percentage is OK if you're taking occasional shots from that range, but even if you account for the payout of the 3pt shot + factor in the effect he has on the offense, it's not worth it, he's actually harming the offense with his total lack of offensive utility. He's 4.5% below league average eFG%, and roughly the same below league average for guards.

In short, he's bloody terrible, even if you notice that he's shooting 32% from downtown. They'd be better with basically any other option out there, and he's a big part of why Charlotte is the 3rd-worst offense in the league.

He's about 5% worse than league average for centers finishing at the rim on the rare occasions he even gets there, he's a weak 3pt shooter, he doesn't draw fouls (though he's solid for a big man when he gets FTAs) and is essentially useless past 10 feet, though he's got good touch close to but not right at the rim.

In essence, he's a giant waste of skin as far as a big-minutes NBA player. 32 mpg from him is doing some serious harm to that team. Blech, he's awful.

+/- doesn't mean much on a garbage team

The mistake was that OKC could've had Taj Gibson instead, who is much, much better than Mullens. Gibson would've been a great fit on OKC too.

bingo. you can't really have a high +/- with guys like bismack biyombo and MKG on your team. come on GB.

How is he "much, much" better than Mullens? Mulley just turned 24 the other day and Taj will be 28 in July. Taj has a per of 14.85 ans Mullens is 13.5. Let's see what Mully's per is in 3.5 years to compare apples to apples development and age wise.

MKG has -7.3, Biyombo has -8.1. Somehow Mullens is managing a +/- per 100 possession way worse than both of them. Why is that, if it's supposed to the reason for Mullens bad +/-? Let alone that Mullens is the worst player on the Bobcats in terms of RAPM, but well ...

He might be worth more than a 2nd-round pick but it's not like OKC needs a power forward who chucks up shots and plays average defense. Considering the two superstars they have, they need guys who hustle, block shots and play great D at that position. Obviously they have them...

Taj plays this newfangled thing called defense, which is always suspiciously absent from PER calculations.

Also, I like how you want to compare "apples to apples" in terms of age, but not in terms of role. Mullens starts and has a green light to jack up a ton of shots. When Taj starts, he puts up 16 pts and 12 reb on 60% FG - all much better than Mullens' production as a starter.
