Players never seem to score 50 in a game anymore...

From 2000-01 until 2008-09, 50 points was scored on 81 occasions (18 alone in 06-07)

From 2009-10 on, there have been only 9 instances.

I can't speak for everybody, but there has always been a great appeal to the 50 point game. And then I think back to times when Willie Burton/Dana Barros/Tracy Murray reached the feat and how exciting it was. Trading cards used to have "50 point club" subsets. Just something special about that number, I suppose...

Now, seemingly, amny of the players who could score 50 are stuck on super teams (Kobe, Durant, Lebron, Carmelo), so there's never really the need to go out and score 50 to carry a game, like you'd see with T-Mac, AI, Arenas. And I understand that basketball is a team sport, but there's always been soemthing exciting about those great individual games that forever stand out.

2012-12 has one 50-point game. Is the 50-point game nearly extinct?

Durant will start dropping 50 point games like nothing in two years.

in all fairness,

you had people like Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing who had smooth offensive games. All of them had automatic post-up games.

The only truly finess offensive players right now are Lebron, Kobe, Melo, KD.... and only 3 of the 4 are in their prime, aka really able to hit 50. Out of those, only 2 have a post game.

I remember the days of Agent Zero dropping 50 and Jamison dropping huge digits in GSW too

Add LaMarcus Aldridge, the guy can be a scoring machine, if he is assertive enough. Pure finess

Answer: super teams; the talent and scoring is distributed.

I can see Irving and Melo going for 50.

Puke, no thanks. He is too deeply entrenched in mediocrity as a scorer to justify the volume necessary for 50 points.

uh... LaMarcus is great and I respect him a lot,

but a 50 point scorer? He is not.

Heck, he barely averages 20.

Even Lebron's had only 9 50 point games in his career.

That's not a lot considering he's the best in the league. Of course he will have less on the Heat now that he has plenty of help alongside Bosh/Allen/Wade and co.

To score that much you have to be in a close game where one player shoulders the load against another team. Teams have realized that this 1v5 hero ball doesn't work. Guys like Allen Iverson and Tmac just don't exist anymore.

You're kidding right? Now, ISO ball is more popular than it's ever been. I guarantee that passes per possession is less now than it used to be.

Idk that's really strange but I can see Harden or Irving doing it a couple of times as they are on teams with little offensive talent

The only players I can see scoring 50 are Harden, Irving, Melo, KD, and MAYBE LeBron, only because he has Bosh and Wade and doesn't need 50.

 It's too late, man. They already traded Harden, so the Thunder are stuck with their master brick-layer.

The 06-2007 numbers are rather skewed considering 10 of 18 50-point games were scored by one player.

.
Change Durant for Lebron and you got it right.
.
The dude is always on a different mission. When people say he can't do something, he does it. Last year, post game. This year, efficiency AND THREE POINTER. Next year, he's probably gonna try the triple double average or the 30+ points again. That's a thing missing in his legacy - more absurd scoring games in the playoffs and regular season.
.
I'm waiting for another 50 point game from Lebron. I miss those.
