The Indiana Pacers and Paul George are finalizing a five-year, $90 million-plus maximum contract extension, according to league sources.

George is expected to sign the deal this week.

A member of the 2010 draft class, George has until Oct. 31 to agree upon an extension with the Pacers to avoid restricted free agency next summer.

George averaged 17.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game last season, his third in the NBA.

That's about right. George has been on an upward projectory and right now the skies the limit. Indy is in good shape right now, although it's unfortunate that their lack of an elite talent is going to make it difficult for them to get that ultimate prize. You never know, though. A couple of things go their way and they might be the next '04 Pistons.

Too bad there are so few guys truly worthy of a max contract.
Honestly I thought most people believed the new CBA would eliminate bad contracts for players not worthy of a max but I think what it did was just stunt the salaries of guys who aren't all-stars.

Thats ALOT of cheddah the Pacers are handing to Hibbs and PG. Heres hoping they improve ALOT because right now, both have not been worthy of that contract.

What are the Pacers going to do? If they don't give George the max their are at least a half dozen other teams that would. If George leaves the Pacers become a mediocre team that is neither a contender for a high lottery pick nor a contender for the second round of the playoffs.

What.. they took the eventual champion Miami Heat to 7 games, and they should've won the first game but they gave it away

Couldn't they just match (a much lower) offer from another team that targets him in restricted free agency???

The only argument you could make is that the Pacers have a window right now (ostensibly) so they might as well go all in with the peeps they have.

It makes a franchise seem cheap and petty when they match an offer and keep the player

I don't think PGs worth 18 mill a year...

I'd think 15 would be enough.

It's the market and he earned it, plus everyone knew he was getting the 5th year. Now no one has to deal with it during the season and can focus. This leaves only Stephenson and Granger not signed next year, meaning worst case scenario and both leave, we still have a very very good team.

He has a chance to become the best SF behind LBJ and Durant, so I don't think it is wasted money. He's got skills, and he has time to improve upon said skills considerably. It is a bet, but it is a bet most small market teams have to make. Luckily Indy has seen this guy can play at a high level in big moments. Just need all around consistency.

wow, that's a lot more than I was thinking, thought he'd get Harden type money.
