Has Brandon Jennings finally turned the corner?

Post#1 » by Mr Peanut » Thu Dec 19, 2013 3:09 am

Just had 28 points and 14 assists leading the Pistons to a win over the Celtics for the 4th best record in the East (in b4 East is terrible).

This season he is averaging 17.5 points, 8.0 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 steals on 39.4% FG and 36.7% 3PT.

Those watching the games will see his shot selection has been much better this season (shooting over 41% in December after a slow start to the season) and he is passing more (backed up by his assist numbers).

For critics of his FG% he is shooting very similar numbers to Kyrie Irving, John Wall and Kemba Walker and better from 3PT than all of them.

His assists per game are good for 4th-tied in the NBA along with Jrue Holiday and Ty Lawson.

It seems Jennings has almost a universal bias against him by RealGM, but is it fair to say he has finally turned the corner as a player in this league?

He is still shooting under 40% from the field on the season, turning the ball over and sucking a lot.

He hasn't turned anything...

He's having the best season of of his career right now for sure. He's had a lot really incredible games, and a some bad ones as well. His playmaking has been a pleasant surprise.

the best part was "if you watch the games you'll know his shot selection is better."

Ever heard of a shot chart? it tells you the same thing.

I posted his season stats to back up the fact he has played an integral part in leading the Pistons to the 4th best record in the East.

Maybe read the entire post before making condescending comments...oh wait, this is realgm.

The awkward moment when he's had a lot more than one good game......

No substitute for watching the games. A shot chart doesn't tell you if they were contested shots, how early or late in the shot clock they were or whether there was an open man to pass to instead of shooting.

49.3% TS with a 16.5% TOV% even though he chucks so much, tells me he sucks a lot more than he's good.

Fine. He had three good games this season. Happy?

List of PGs shooting around 40%

Lilliard
Westbrook
Irving
Wall
Jennings
Kemba

Can someone please explain once and for all why Jennings is the only one on this list who gets criticized here for his ~40% shooting?

Advanced metric are ruining basketball discussion, everything isn't a science.

No, it doesn't tell you the same thing, but you might have answered my question above. I'm guessing the reason Jennings continues to get flack on here, but these other PGs don't is because you actually watch them play, and just look at Jennings stats/shot chart to form your opinion on him.

Shot selection is more than just location on the floor and shot attempts. Its actually more about timing and the flow of the game, than it is where you shoot from or how many you take. Things you have no possible way of knowing just by looking at a shot chart.

Jennings is the total package of fail. Turnovers plus bad shooting plus no defense. He is probably among the worst starting pgs in the Nba.

No doubt advanced metrics have their uses, but on RealGM they seem more of a convenient way for the casual basketball fan who doesn't watch games to try justify their argument and sound informed on a topic they know little about.

fine, a shot chart doesn't tell you that, but there's a stat that does.

Shot defense is defined by CAC as the pressure that a defender applies to the shooter. There are 7 possible values:

OPEN (no defender within 5 feet of player)
GUARDED (defender within 3 to 5 feet)
PRESSURED (defender within 3 feet but no hand up)
CONTESTED (defender within 3 feet and hand is up in front of shooter)
ALTERED (defender within 3 feet, hand is up, and shooter is forced to change shooting angle or release point while in air)
BLOCK (defender blocks shot)
FOUL (defender fouls shooter)

https://auth.cacvantage.com/

and, if you can do a little math, you can figure out how many seconds were on the shot clock just by looking at the game logs.

Spoken like someone who hasn't watched a lot of Jennings this year, obviously.
