Good on Gordon, sounds like a good bloke. Good job on the girl.

Also, a legit serious difficulty in distinguishing engaged vs. married in this thread.

Yeah, and since the school year for her ended for her 6-7 months ago, she's probably 19 by now. They most likely met when Hayward was 22 and she 18. Big deal.

It isn't odd, but personally I feel like everyone goes through a big change in character and outlook on life from ~18-23, and then again in another 3-5 years, becoming quite different people (at least in things effecting life decisions, like changing thoughts on career, changing your mind about things you care about the most) and perhaps with completely different tastes. And it's also impossible to predict. The world is a big place and it's pretty hard to be totally sure what you will be satisfied with when your experience is so limited.

I'm not saying it's weird/wrong but I'd be very, very cautious if I were either of them. A lot of people who "strike out" on marrying their loved one decide they were glad they missed out/got rejected, given 5 years.

I agree, and that is why people shouldn't get married impulsively

With those eyebrows, she should have married Anthony Davis. Their kids would have one THICK unibrow!

It may look good for him now to lock down some prime bait but when he's 35 (still prime age for a man), she'll be 30. Who's going to be laughing then? :)

It was a merry Christmas for Utah Jazz player Gordon Hayward: he proposed and she said, "Yes!"

Hayward, 23, posted a photo on his Instagram account of himself and his new fiancee, Robyn Van Vliet, on Christmas day, with the caption: "Merry Christmas to everyone out there! Hope it’s a good one! Mine was especially good bc SHE SAID YES!!!! So thrilled I get to marry my best friend and such an amazing person @robynvanvliet! I love you!!!"

According to Van Vliet’s Facebook page, she graduated in 2013 from an Indiana high school and is currently attending cosmetology school.

Culture's a little crazy when the pressure is on people to marry and start families 10+ years after their biological primes. Get married young and get after it! Don't wanna be your own kids grandpa. Good on ya Gordon.

Good Lord people, let the man be. If he wants to be married to the lady then be happy for him.

Lot of people talking like he's married her already. He only proposed. Yes, it's a commitment in and of itself, the first step towards a marriage, but it isn't legally binding and it could be years before it actually becomes official. My wife and I were engaged for 5 years. I've got a couple of friends who have been together for 13 years and have been engaged for more than half that time, and they still haven't set a date.

Sure, 18 seems young, and they don't appear to have known each other for that long, but if they are happy, good for them.

This. I'm 33 and my wife is 28. Pretty normal, actually.

There is a difference between relationships that are older like 33-28, compare to younger 23-18. When you are near your 30s a five years difference can relate to each other better than a couple 23 & 18, because they have been through life.18-25 there is a rapid change and maturity. Just like a 15 year old dating a 10 year old, you cant compare that to a 30 yr old dating a 28 yr old. There is a huge maturity gap. Yea she is an adult but the girl hasnt become a woman yet, she needs to learn and grow up. Most people who get married around 18 end up a failure more than any older couple. Usually people who prey on young partner like that is because they are vulnerable and impressionable. Most likely he took advantage of the young girl vulnerability. Being a 18 you never had a true adult relationship.

Hell my cousin spent a year in prison for statutory rape for being caught having sex with a girl he was dating, she was 16 and he was 18. Lost his full basketball scholarship and now registered as a sexual predator because of the situation.

This is actually a pretty decent point. If they wait a solid 2-3 years before actually getting married it won't seem as weird.

But the other thing is that, if one half of this relationship is going to regret it, theres just a good of a chance its the girl! 18-19 is really damn young to make a decision like that (even 23 is kind of young) and let's just hope she actually knows what she wants at this point (and Gordon). I do wonder how he met this girl though. Like someone said, its not like he could have met her in a club since she's still under 21.
