Dunk Contest Format Changed

This year’s event will feature the participants competing as a team – three players representing the Eastern Conference and three players representing the Western Conference – in an above-the-rim two-round format.
In a significant first in the event’s history, the competition will tip off with a Freestyle Round where the dunkers for each conference will have 90 seconds to showcase as many dunks as they want. At the conclusion of the Freestyle Round, the panel of judges will then choose a winner by voting “East” or “West.” The winning conference will earn the advantage of deciding whether its dunkers will dunk first or second in the head-to-head battles that take place in the Battle Round.
The Battle Round will feature head-to-head matchups pitting East dunkers vs. West dunkers, with the judges choosing a winner for each battle. Upon losing a head-to-head battle, that dunker is then eliminated from the competition. The first team to win three battles will win the competition and be crowned 2014 Sprite Slam Dunk champions.

This has the potential to suck hard if their really won't be an individual winner.

on first read I kinda like it.
just realised there will be no dunk champion though which is...........odd.
I do like that the players are gonna have a chance to get loose without the bright lights solely on them and get the crowd oohing and arring before the pressure really starts. I just wrote a post before opening this saying that I wanted more guaranteed dunks for contestants before any elimination. We'll hopefully get to see a lot more of the players individual take on windmills, 360's and between the leg dunks rather than trick dunks. If they've got a 360 between the legs then pull it out in the final round but don't subject us to ten failed attempts in the first round.
Still odd that there is no champion. Even if it were just by txt/internet vote, wouldn't it still be better to have an individual dunk champion as well as conference bragging rights?

That is almost an amalgamation of the how to improve the dunk contest thread. Props to NBA.

A lot better than that one idea they had more than ten years ago where the dunkers had to spin a wheel like in the Price is Right and were forced to do the dunk that it landed on. It was so awful.

This was the only way to get Lebron into the dunk contest next year.

I saw that the fans will still vote for a player as "dunker of the night".

Freestyle thing sounds very cool, especially since it means no props and just creative dunks. You can't set up props in 90 seconds. No champion thing, not so much. I just want to see cool dunks and if it is there, I won't complain about not having a single champion.

No individual winner?
I wonder how Vince Carter would have felt in 2000 if he had to share his victory with Ricky Davis and Larry Hughues.

Paul George, Wall, Ross vs Lilliard, McLemore, Barnes.
East wins handily on paper.

Sounds entertaining but we gotta have a dunk champion, doesn't seem right not having one.

The East should destroy this one. Clearly the NBA is trying to eradicate the notion that the Eastern conference is a joke of the NBA.
I'm surprised Dirk and Duncan weren't included on the Western team.

crowning a champ shouldn't be a hard rule change to implement. Just keep going after one conference gets eliminated.
