The Euroleague thread got me thinking about an old idea I had for incorporating the NBA to a division in Europe. Would it be feasible to expand new franchises to multiple cities? For instance, maybe Kansas City shares a team with London. London is the home city in Europe. Kansas City is the sister city and domestic home in the U.S. So the team could play home games in Kansas City for stretches of the season, then go back to Europe for the games over there. It would make the travel easier and add flexibility to the schedule. Plus, smaller U.S. markets could be made larger by adding the market overseas.

Could the league do this for 4 to 6 teams? Would it work?

30 teams in the league is already more than enough. I can't imagine adding any more.

I think if the NBA wanted to expand there would be teams in Seattle and ______ by now. I think Seattle will try to steal away a current franchise and leave it at that.

I don't think its feasible for the NBA to expand into Europe. It's better to think of expanding to Seattle then it is to London or any other European city. It's just too far away.

Europe is already obsessed with basketball. Look at countries like Spain, Greece, Serbia, Croatia where you can make the argument that basketball is more popular than soccer in those countries. (I'm Greek, so I can attest to that).

I guess my post isn't necessarily in favor of the idea of expanding to Europe, or expansion at all. But if the NBA decides to expand, does it make sense to have some franchises split their home between two cities, one in the U.S. and one in Europe.

I just think it might work better than franchises 100% based in Europe in some European division or something.

Europe isn't obsessed with basketball at all. Europe has always been soccer first. While the number of talented european basketball players has increased over the last few years, and there are pretty solid national teams, the Euroleague has always been a place for "not good enough for the NBA" pro-players, and the good enough players usually storm to get to the NBA. The Euroleague is really more like D-League with a bigger fanbase, and maybe better coaching...

Send the Bucks to Seattle and all will be well.

European teams will become a possibility once Elon Musk invents tube travel.

LOL. No. Just because Greek, Serbian and Croatian football teams suck in European competitions, doesn't mean basketball is more popular. You're WAY off with Spain anyway, they're the defending European and World champions and have Barça and Real. Basketball isn't even close to the popularity of football.

Even as an European I have to say..... cut that European expansion nonsense.

Lol what. Do you think the top tier players in the Euroleague aren't good enough to play in the NBA? What would you prefer, a net income of 1,5-3M € while being the superstar of your team and playing less games with only 2 games per week or beeing a 7th to 9th guy in the NBA while being paid about 2-3 M $ before taxes?

Nobody cares about basketball. Fan base is minimal. Luckily there are rich people who wants to put and to lose money in ball.

Might sharing NBA ball with a U.S. city help though? Europe would only have to invest in 20 or so regular season home games per year. This scarcity may actually help major league basketball survive the new market.

Unfortunately, you haven't travelled much in Europe. Though soccer might be considered the "national" sport, there are many people who in the urban areas of these aforementioned countries, would prefer the sport of basketball to soccer. It's that simple- basketball is really popular in these countries.

I'm from Europe myself. And you don't know what you're talking about.

In Spain the only team sport that matters is football. Then you have individuals sports, like F1, cyclism, Moto GP or tennis. Basically nationalism, Alonso, Contador, Lorenzo, Nadal. Only Spanish national basketball team is followed.
In France the same, national teams are followed, meanwhile sport is not.
