I actually felt like his stroke was quirky in some way, but I couldn't pin point what was wrong with it. His shot always reminded me a little of Barbosa's and now I know why.

Maybe that's how he gets the power to drain those deep three's he takes all the time despite having a small frame.

interesting

I would say the chances are excellent this is not an intentional mechanic to his shot. Like many have mentioned, if it ain't broke...

I'd wonder if releasing his fingertips from the ball for a split second allows him to easily make a final adjustment to his shot without altering the alignment of his wrist and arm. And as mentioned, Lillard seems to shoot 28' shot effortlessly. His form doesn't change. Maybe there's some added leverage with that quirk

Damian Lillard's shot doesn't have the most arc, this is probably why.

It's also probably why he can shoot it so deep, because it's a slingshot basically.

My shot is a rainbow, if I wanna shoot it deep, I jump into it.

He's 6'3 195, I say that's pretty average to good for an NBA player of his height.

I used to shoot kinda like that; you can get really great ball rotation shooting like this - the ball just snaps the net - it's very satisfying

I always felt like he shot-put it then guided in at the same time. But I never even thought about looking at in in this level of detail.

Seems like the first act of launching it when he leaves his fingers gets a lot of power and range. Then he makes contact again putting the guidance system in to give it that accuracy.

Thanks for the find OP - wish I could +1 a few times. Surely, some journalist is going to steal your analysis.

that's probably how he can get that extra oomph on the ball without involving his legs too much. he's more so an arm shooter.

I'm not really sure what advantages this would give to an opposing team, and with how advanced scouting has become I'm sure other teams have spotted this from game footage.

Teams now hire guys just to review countless hours of game footage and come up with scouting information.

Why? It obviously doesn't make his jumpshot any slower. Just ask the Rockets.

I did not. What's the other meaning outside of having a good jumper? Is it sexual? :o :D

Lillard's got big hands so he doesn't lose much of accuracy, I guess it would give the ball a bit more spin too. Odd little quirk.
