2014-2015 NBA MVP Discussion

Post#1 » by MixedUp » Wed Nov 5, 2014 8:56 am

The NBA season has only started one week yada, yada.. I know that!

Still I find it interesting to talk about the MVP. Because.. Why can't we talk about it during the first week of the season?

My question to all of you is:
After having the luxury of seeing the first week of the season. Which players (name 3/5) do you expect to be frontrunners for the MVP award? Normally we would all say LeBron - Durant but maybe the start for both has put a bit of the spotlight on other players.

The ones I personally see as possible MVP candidates:

James
Durant
Griffin
Curry
Harden

All depends on how their teams do though..

These five are the most probable candidates. I'd love to add Davis, but the thing about the MVP award is the team record.

If Miami keeps up with the best, maybe Bosh could receive some attention too, imagine that? :D

Whether Durant (or Westbrook) had a chance would purely come down to whether or not they come back strong and make the playoffs. I think, at the moment, they're outsiders. They're going to have such a deficit to make up.

The best performers so far are Bosh and Thompson. Thompson is more of an outlier - Curry will have more of an MVP shot in the long run.

I don't see Bosh carrying serious momentum unless Miami finish with a better record than Cleveland and there's some kind of media emphasis behind that.

Houston are maybe the best team so far. I can't weigh up whether Dwight or Harden would be more deserving?

LAC have looked inconsistently good. Paul or Griffin could be candidates due to popularity, though I'd suggest Paul would be more important.

If the top seed in the West is not SAS, I expect the best player on the best team to win MVP, unless KD or RW average 35 or something.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

James- As of right now looks like he does not care.
Durant- They need to make a heck of a run.
Griffin- I dont know how I feel about griffin.
Curry- Playing very well so far.
Harden-I am impressed.

I think Harden has been the clear MVP so far, with Davis and Bosh coming up behind. Of course I don't necessarily expect it to stay this way: for one, LeBron is going to start playing better at some point.

James Harden and that free throw line is amazing dude is shooting 40% from the field but is getting to the line 13 times a game.

He's been basically glacial from mid-range so far, although I think some of that is he just hasn't gotten great looks from there. Still, he was actually a very good mid-range shooter last year and is currently shooting 25% from 10-16 feet and 19% from 16-23 feet. His FG% will pick up once those start falling.

As much as I can't stand Griffin, the dude is a force. That said, I can't see him winning the MVP because that would require a tremendous amount of regular season success on the part of the Clippers and any success will be perceived as a joint Paul/Griffin effort - they'll split the votes.

Excellent call on Bosh. He's been great and that would be a fantastic story.

Right now:

1. Griffin
2. Bosh
3. Howard
4. Klay
5. Harden

I'd love to see Bosh win it but this could be one of the most wide open races ever.

The difference between CP3 and Griffin has been growing steadily and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes noticeably clear that Griffin is the better player by end of the season. His shooting alone has seen a considerable improvement, foul shooting, ball handling much better and passing is class as always.

Klay over Curry? without Curry there would be no Klay.

Agreed. I just wonder if this is the year. Paul still has that reputation and is still a big name. I mean, wasn't he just ranked as the second best player in the game after Durant went down? Now we can pooh pooh rankings all we want, but they do paint a picture of people's perceptions and those perceptions do matter in MVP voting. Griffin, to my mind, is the better player though.

You could swap one for the other especially if Klay can continue his hot streak.

I agree with you but I will say it helps that Curry draws a double team non stop for Klay to get open shots.

Not always, Klay stops and pops on fastbreaks, shoots off screens both as the ball handler and the cutter. I wouldn't be surprised if he can replicate his shooting while sharing the court with another facilitator like Livingston or Iguodola.
