Does Zach Lavine look like a Future Star?

Post#1 » by SmoothCriminal » Thu Mar 26, 2015 5:04 pm

Just watching his highlights against the Jazz the other day, I said "wow, this guy does his thing so effortlessly and is cold blooded". You can see the talent and the skill set in his game blessed with crazy athleticism dude looks like he is going to eventually find his game and blossom into a league must-see player. I think he can have that huge breakout like how players like Tracy McGrady, Paul George and Gilbert Arenas had to learn to find themselves in the NBA, before turning into franchise players.

I hope so, but I have my doubts.

I'm not seeing it yet. His athleticism is through the roof, and he seems to have a couple things going for him in the way of skills but his basketball IQ is really low. It's difficult to say though because I think Flip has been playing him out of position for most of the year. He's clearly over matched at the point guard position and he's unable to handle the floor general/play making requirements of the position. He's looked noticeably better at shooting guard when he doesn't have to think as much.

I agree maybe not better but being that good is good enough. Green is solid. Hopefully he finds consistency much sooner. Good enough for a big game and daily big play.

I see him becoming a really good 6th man. He looks worse than he is right now because he is playing PG while in reality he is a SG. I think Flip is playing him there so he can develop some of those PG skills and have those traits as a SG.

He has the potential to be a lockdown defender. He is already good man-man when there is no screen set. He needs to get better getting through screens and in team defense which will come.

Offensively, his handles are good enough for a 2. He has a nice looking shot, but it's inconsistent. And he is so quick and athletic that he should be a good cutter.

I think the only way he becomes a star is if he develops a really good 3pt shot. You can say any player would be good if they are deadly from 3 so I don't see any reason to count on it.

His dunks are nice but he doesn't take the ball to the hole in traffic. More of a flashy dunk on the break kind of player. Not many players who aren't tough develop toughness so don't count on him becoming a defensive guy either.

If he ever develops a shot, I think he could be a monster off-ball player. I don't think he is suited towards a ball-dominant role.

I haven't seen the kid play outside of once this season vs the Knicks and the dunk contest. But the very first thing I realized right away is that he's faster and more athletic than anyone at any given time. And it made me even more critical that he had that advantage and didn't use it. Some guys simply don't have that gift and he does. He should be modeling his game after Russell Westbrook. And don't say that's crazy cuz let's face it. Russell isn't overly skilled even now, five years into the league. He just over powers everyone with his total disregard for his body and competition. So in reality Kevin should be able to do that off sheer want-to. Now imagine he learns some skills. Starting with defense.

Cool thing I noticed about Zach was when he does hit big shots hes angry or upset at himself/his play on the court. Im excited for his future.

He's just a baby, with his entire basketball life ahead of him. It is completely unfair for anyone to try to peg him as anything other than what he's already shown to be to this point.

Patience used to be a thing.

Any response to this is relying on blind intuition masked as fans' smarts. This question is about at the same level as a third grade girl asking 'Will Joey P be my future husband?'

He's got a great first stop and world-class hops, and he's not good at virtually anything else now. He's got a long way to go, some get there, most don't, it's usually fun to follow.

Going into the 2014 draft there were five players with superstar potential:

Andrew Wiggins
Jabari Parker
Joel Embiid
Dante Exum
and
Zach LaVine

Exum looked/still looks like a combo-guard-Kobe, whilst LaVine is a physical freak.

It's the blindly-confident, assertive attitude that accompanies LaVine that's giving him the edge though. Dante Exum even cited that he lacked aggression and it was his main flaw.

If I read his statement correctly, I think the names were separated by at least one sentence.

I think he will end up being another Ricky Davis or Sprewell. A 20ppg scorer on a bad team, or a really good #3 on a playoff team.
