I'm a Cleveland sports fan so naturally I've attempted to root for a good team in order to have some more happiness in my life, but this never works.
I can have a 2nd favorite team and root for them or whatever but whenever the play my team the mere thought of rooting against my team makes me feel like a traitor, I can't do it.
I found that it's much easier to be a bandwagon fan of teams you have no geographical association with, I liked Inter when Ronaldo was there but I immediately switched to Real when he moved.
Sorry for extensive poll choices.

The Hornets were my second favorite team but this summer is testing my resolve. That FO is just mind boggling.

Never, always Dolphins/Marlins/Heat, although I swore off the Marlins a couple of years ago and basically don't watch baseball anymore. If I ever got back into it it would be with the Marlins, but not til Loria sells the team (kind of understand how Knicks fans feel in that way).

I've been a Jazz fan since Stockton-to-Malone, but I also live in Vancouver. So when we got the Grizzlies, I was a completely unrepentant sports bigamist, rooting for both teams. When we lost the Grizzlies again, the Jazz took over the #1 spot by themselves again. Not sure if that counts towards what you're asking.

As a kid I guess, I liked the Bulls cause most young kids liked the Bulls. And I grew up in New York so I always saw the box scores and the games on the paper, but once I moved to Orlando I started following them solely.

Grew up loving MJ’s Bulls and the Pistons. After MJ retired stopped following the Bulls and just kept up with the Pistons until we signed Josh Smith. After a few Josh Smith games I quit watching and focused on other teams. This past season tried the Pistons again but then went into rage mode before quitting once more. Finally Smith was dumped and I resumed watching. Actually looking forward to this season.

Always loved every Detroit sports teams. Never rooted for other teams, unless it's me betting on a team. I do root for players that I liked coming from draft classes that Detroit doesn't pick tho. Like Giannis and Porzingis.

I was given an NBA jersey as a kid gift back in 1997. It was a KG jersey. Been living in Europe / Australia all my life.

Used to live in Windsor Ontario, which was right across Detroit, so naturally I was a Pistons fan first. I used to be a diehard fan, watched every game and grabbed the sports section of the news just to see the players' stats and read the column and summary of the game. If I was at some place that didn't have a TV or wasn't showing the Pistons game, I would find the nearest unattended radio and listen to the game.
There was this point in my life I just completely stopped liking basketball, and then when I got back into it the Pistons overhauled the entire roster. I grew up with Joe Dumars, Jerry Stackhouse, Terry Mills, Lindsay Hunter, Jon Barry, Grant Hill. I didn't know who Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Mehmet Okur, Tayshaun Prince, Corliss Williamson were. The only guy I knew was Ben Wallace and Lindsay Hunter. That was also the year they won the championship over the Lakers. I should have been ecstatic and thrilled, that a team I loved so much finally got their piece of the pie. And yet I wasn't. Watching them win the trophy was the same as seeing any other team win the trophy for me. It made me realize, I'm not a Pistons fan anymore.
I've always been a secondary fan of the Raptors because I loved watching Vince Carter play, but I never actively liked or followed them; I only cheered for them whenever I got the chance to watch their games. Well the season I had my epiphany about not being a Pistons fan, I don't know what it was about the Raptors that attracted me to them, but I liked watching them a lot. Keep in mind this was around the time Carter got traded, so all reason for me to like them should have been sucked away. They sucked that year, and the Pistons put together another great season, and yet I liked the Raptors more. I cheered for them hard. It grew to the point that I became a diehard fan, and I've been ever since.
So I started really liking the Raptors during the beginning of the Colangelo and Bargnani era. Yeah.

Was a Vancouver Grizzlies fan first but then they left and then I stumbled around in NBA fan purgatory for a while until I moved on to Tim Duncan and the Spurs.

Been a Magic fan for about 24 years now, since 1991. I was originally a Bulls fan for 2-3 years and of course supported them really until MJ retired as he was the reason I liked the Bulls, but my fanboyism switched to Orlando in 1991 because I wanted a "my team" not a team so many followed. No NBA team here (duh) but the reason I switched originally was everyone in my school was just following teams that won and debating all the time on who was the best: Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Pistons, New York. Isn't it always like that, really? So why Orlando? New team, liked the unis, liked the logo, liked the colors. Started out simple as that. Since then I've grown into a die-hard fan of this franchise and I can't see myself ever switching again.

I was a diehard Sonics fan growing up, loved Kemp and Gary Payton but had no ties to the Seattle area. Then they were both traded and the lockout hit and I was turned off of the NBA for a while. I got back into it with the "Going to Work" Pistons as they were the local team and I knew about the mess with the Seattle stadium situation. By the time the Sonics got Durant the writing was on the wall for the team leaving. Seattle basketball will always have a soft spot in my heart and if/when the Sonics come back I'll likely be pretty conflicted on my favorite team (until Columbus gets a team of course).

Grew up going to Bucks games but moved to Houston and started going to Rockets games. I have nothing but love for the Milwaukee Bucks and watch them as often as I can, but once you start going to games for a new team, it's hard not to follow that team more closely.
In truth, I pretty much like all NBA teams and players but primarily root for Houston and Milwaukee.

Was a bit of a Pacers fan for a while until the Malace at the Palace (grew up in PA but my first jersey my mom bought me was Reggie Miller) , then kinda followed Lebron for a few years until 2010 and liked how KD announced his extension on twitter. Never really got into the NBA more than the playoffs til about 3 years ago, prior to that was more of a college fan. Its weird now because I let games effect how good a mood I'm in and got really into the NBA since following the Thunder, but was more a passing fan growing up.

I am in the unique position of evaluating whether or not to switch teams.
I live in south/central Illinois and am a Rams fan. They might move to LA. It would be difficult for me to imagine myself rooting for an LA market team, located in a city I suspect I'll never visit again the rest of my life, rather than supporting an organization in the Midwest. The Bears and Colts are both about 4 hours away from where I live, and I visit both cities with some regularity or could do so with greater frequency very easily. I'm a Bulls fan, so the Bears seem like a natural fit but - forgive me Bulls fans - Bears fans annoy the **** out of me. On the other hand, Andrew Luck is probably my favorite player in the NFL to watch. But that seems like a fanboy reason to switch teams. And lastly, I like Jeff Fischer, I like and trust the Rams current front office, and I'm excited for where that team is headed and am already connected as a fan to many of the players.
Its weird "deciding" who to root for. Hopefully the Rams stay and I won't have to.
As for "switching" teams for any reason other than the team literally deserting your market, that's for pussies.
