NBA Athletes commit more crime (relative to other athletes)

Post#1 » by JV4MVP » Sun Oct 11, 2015 2:55 pm

Found this pretty interesting, surprised its higher than the NFL:

Although NFL athletes are often in the news for domestic violence, DUIs and other transgressions, NBA athletes actually commit more 'crimes'. In work done last summer over at fivethityeight, Ben Morris showed that NFL athletes actually commit crimes at lower rates than the general population. In his work, he showed that roughly 2,000 DUIs are recorded per 100,000 regular folks compared to a rate of about 550 for the NFL. In the above figure we see that 3.8% of NBA athletes committed a crime last year versus 2.3% of NFL players. For example, there were 17 NBA arrests in 2014 and approximately 447 players. For a detailed list of the offenses, please see here.

For now, the observed arrest trends are unexplained. An oft presented theory is that NBA athletes are from poor neighborhoods and are thus more likely to commit crimes. The idea that NBA athletes often rise from the ghetto has been proven to be rare. In research published in 2011, the researchers showed that 'The popular image of the African American National Basketball Association (NBA) player as rising from the ‘ghetto’ to international fame and fortune misleads academics and the public alike'. They found that roughly 65% of African American and 90% of White NBA players came from middle or upper class households.

In 5 of the last 6 years, a greater percent of NBA athletes committed more crimes than other athletes. The below figure represents these arrest data over time.

Arrested...or convicted? As Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antić have just shown, the first does not necessarily mean the second.

This is interesting. What constitutes as "Middle Class" though?

It seems that the data is counting an arrest as "committing a crime" rather than actual convictions as "committing a crime." While a misnomer that is probably intended to sensationalize, I would hope that the same definition is being used across all leagues/sports for the study.

There are a lot less players in the NBA than the NFL and other leagues, one player getting arrested in the NBA affects the percentage more so than one player getting arrested in the NFL. I'm sure based off of pure totals that the NFL has more people arrested than the NBA.

I would say the NFL has the worst characters as a whole. I believe that steroid use is way more rampant than anyone would care to admit, and this aids in some of the violent behavior we see on and off the field.

The stuff about beating women and such happens on a larger scale than is reported, and to me, steroids could be a big factor in that rage behavior.

The NFL players are probably just too busy beating their wives that they would have time to leave their homes for other crimes.
(and most of the domestic violence isn't made public anyway)

Think of it as a job application. You don't mention if you've been convicted, or if you're guilty, but if you've been arrested that goes on there no doubt.

Again, the "study" looks at arrests--not convictions--to make a statement about "crime" rates. :nonono: Given the comparatively small number of NBA players, not to mention the fact (examples below) that blacks are much more likely to be arrested than whites doing the same thing, and you have a sensationally sounding article that mean really...nothing.

This just shows the problem with this country's mindset, if you are arrested you are a "criminal", guilty until proven lucky to not go to prison for it, which disproportionately effects minorities or anyone who the arresting officer decides needs to go to jail.
If you'd rather see your team fail so you can be right

It's a reference from an academic paper which can be retrieved @ http://www.umdknes.com/knes287resources/Readings/08/R07.pdf

It states, "using information on parental occupation, neighborhood descriptions, and general statements of class position, our coding yielded three categories of social origin: 1) lower class, 2) middle class, and 3) upper middle and upper class." Such measurements will never be perfect.

Good point. http://nbacrimelibrary.com/ lists arrests but does not specify where there was no conviction (looking at Thabo and Valanciunas DUI case)

Looks like the football/soccer players belong to the master race. Not that many players commit crimes here in Germany... Guess they have more to lose and can't afford **** like that with their 100k (or sth around that)salaries on average if they are not designated players.

It's not surprising given the league's demographics.

I think most of you are missing the point. If arrests were used consistently across all leagues for this analysis, then there is still the question on why NBA players are arrested much more frequently compared to NFL players. Even if race plays a role, 76% of NBA players are black whereas 68% of NFL players are black. Thus, race doesn't seem to be playing much of a role on why NBA players are getting arrested significantly more (3.8%) compared to NFl players (2.3%).

the sample sizes aren't big enough for the nba which only has about 500 ppl in it every year. like four extra arrests in a year or one incident where more than one nba player is arrested like the hawks in ny situation skews the percentage a lot

No, you're missing the point. Far fewer players overall--plus the greater likelihood of being arrested (for 76% if the NBA population)--means that any results are almost invariably skewed. Again, Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antić were never convicted, but this study would still count them as having committed "crimes." And given the much lower number of players (when compared to the NFL), that would mean a higher spike in "crime" rates...when no crimes were ever committed. (E.g., the article itself notes that there were just 17 NBA arrests total in 2014--i.e., we're talking very small numbers, where even one or two false arrests would skew the results completely.)

The NFL gets more attention because their crimes seem to be more violent in nature. Murderers and women beaters, sex crimes, etc.
